mate don't feel guilty about it...its not a big deal and its all a learning curve...the chain was on its way out anyway and I've learned a few things...plus this way it will definitely give me the assurance if its just the chain or an issue with the mech... i believe the mech probably moved somehow maybe in transport, when we went to the Lakes or another place...and all it needed was a tweak on the B-screw to give a better tension to the chain rather than removing the links...lol
like i said, you live and learn...plus the lesson "don't listen to the silver fox!?"...lol

the B screw doesnt really give tension adjustment, it positions the top jockey wheel in relation to the largest sprocket of the cassette. the barrel adjusters and position of the cable in the cable clamp alters tension in the rear mech..........altho i have been known to be wrong

did you get the mech sorted G? Got a new chain today but haven't had the chance to fit it yet since I'm putting the garage down so have been busy on that...hopefully will solve the issue and I'll try to fit to tomorrow. Might just see how many links I have at the moment and add 2!? (The same I removed!?) lol...then it's trying my best to index the gears properly and should be ready for Weekend riding!? If the issue continues with a new chain, it's defo the mech and then it will go back of course! But Sherlock me thinks, it's probably the chain since the problems started after shortening. Lol

You'll be fine G - there is a good youtube vid knocking about showing how to measure and cut a chain for a full suss - and one for indexing (Park tools or MBR - I think) just follow them, that's all I did.

Here's the one I used - of course, once you get it right you never have to do it twice on the same bike - just copy chain length every time. Full suss chain lengthIndexing

New chain on...the issue still maintains...so i think its the mech that is cooked. When the clutch is OFF, all is fine (albeit a bit of chain slap) but when the clutch is ON it doesn't tense the chain at all. Tried to adjust the clutch in various ways...still the same. annoying as F%&&%

seems to me G that this was the original problem right at the beginning, which made you think the chain was sagging, wont the mech still be under warrenty?

Yup...confirmation that it is in fact the mech that is faulty so its going back to Madison. The mechanic at Evans even open the clutch, had a look, cleaned it and greased it but it was still not playing ball. Also i found out that in fact this is a serviceable item on your mech?!?! Never expected that...

Ordered a new mech so hopefully monday it will be on the bike...then ill get a refund from the replacement from Madison. Makes it quick and simple. However Evans offered to put a XT on the bike as well...top top guys, specially the manager James...The mech still works fine as long as i don't engage the clutch. Today my chain only dropped once on a really rough section where i was going a bit fast and while i was dropping a gear...tomorrow I'm going for around 30 miles on that one for its last hurrah!?

where've you been today? where you going tomorrow? Did my usual ride from home mate...the one i showed you with all those bits and bobs...did my favourite section at Porter Brook (twice of course) and this is where that Magic Mary really came to life when i decided on the second run to be brave and go straight through the middle of those really deep and skewed roots...what a tyre?! Then went down to Evans to let then look at the problem and then back home. Tomorrow we are meeting near Endcliffe park and doing Stanage, and some new bits apparently...Nick said 25 miles...(but I'm going to cycle there and back from home which will put a good 5 miles at least. Should be a good tough day out as usual. Btw, now i go down Stanage, then up like we did but then turn right and go over the rocky techy section (on top and along Stanage basically)...until i get onto the road (where we start Burbage)...down to Norfolk Arms...Porter Brook...creates a nice loop with that extra techy rocky area and a small downhill section just before the road...its great!? (I'm sure you must have done it)

So, new mech is on and today I indexed the gears properly after the shambles on Whinlatter. After watching a great clip on you tube from GMBN, it is actually very easy to do! So if anyone is ever nervou about doing it, don't worry...it's a piss as long as you do it step by step properly
