To be honest ..I didn't read all of that Glynn..but the bits I did it sounds like the author has a real chip on his shoulder ... I am probably one of the world's worst climbers ..but all I can say is that with a 46t back 32 front I feel as though I have a bigger spread of gears than with my 2×10 setup ..I love it !

to be honest neil i think i have a chip on my shoulder as well thats why i liked the article. i am all for progress for the right reason but im extremely sceptical of marketing change for the sake of it.i like my gears but im very aware that other riders like their 1x set up. i do think the writer makes some valid points, in fact if i was a mtb journalist i could easily have written the artice meself

He does come across as a bit of an old whiner...change? pah!... Makes some valid points but as someone who has ridden both (and HATES climbing) - I will still never go back. My 11-42 Sunrace cassette and 32t oval front ring gives me all the range I'll ever realistically need. I can spin so slow on that that any more 'range' would mean I'd be standing still on the flat with me legs gooin like fiddlers elbows Nope - 1x10 all the way for me from now on.

Can't really add anything as I am still vintage, 2x10. And happy with it. Would want to try 1x11 before I buy though to see how I would fair. Never say never.

Pez..did you really mean 1x 10? Andy ..have no fear with regard to single chain ring..I jumped straight in without testing and love it .. I think you will also find that in the future you won't have the option of 2x... Whyte are already developing their range to be single chain ring specific frames ..and other manufacturers will surely follow .

Well yes, but now with the Sunrace 11-42..1x10...1x11 all the same range really. Should have more correctly put 1x. The Sunrace is just a cheaper and easier way of getting the 1x11 range - obvs with your shiny new bike being 1x11, you didn't need to consider that.

1x10 using a sunrace as well. had 3x10 and 2x10 previously,I find the wide range of the sunrace coupled with a 32 upfront spot on. Low maintenance, reliable and perfect ratios. Im the worlds worst climber but even im climbing stuff id usually push with the 42.
