What with all the changes to mtb standards over the last few short years, wheel size, straight/tapered steerers and boost if you have a bike, like me,that's 5 years old, 26" and 1 1/8 straight steerer, looking for new parts then your choices are limited. So my question is this. Have road bikes standards changed in a similar way. Would a 5 year old Road bikes geometry/ parts spec be as obsolete as a 5 year old mtb. Just wondering if all cyclists are affected by change/progress the same.

I think a lot of the changes with road bikes are reducing the weight and increasing aerodynamics over any geometry changes.
You don't seem roadies slamming down slaloms skidding sideways, it's more head down and 25/30mph pace along a road where drag would be more noticeable. You're not likely to encounter a rock garden where having a slack HA will come in handy.

Yeah, I just feel mtb'ers are getting a bit of a bum deal. I am all for progress but it seems to be costing us more than roadies. I don't know anything about road bikes but I think they may hold their value better than a mtb, as things there have not really changed? Dunno, just musing.......

Road bikes are getting innovations such as 142 x12 bolt through axle and forks. The new spesh Roubaix as a type of suspension above the forks.
However like mars bars man says most woke is done in the wind tunnel on aerodynamics.
Only one wheel size though not like mtb.

Does a good road bike depreciate about the same as a good mtb? I am guessing not a) due to the changes mtb have gone through in the last few years b) they take a fair bit more abuse. Would that be a fair guess or am I talking pish.

They do depreciate in a similiar way or even worse considering prices I've seen on st. Trouble is with online guys dropping a third on new 2016 bikes when the 2017 versions are released means a used one needs to be cheaper still so 40/50% of the rrp for a bike a year or two hold even though wear and tear is restricted to drivetrain and wheels only.

I notice more road bikes coming with disc brakes

I definitely prefer disc brakes, take not killing myself over a weight penalty.
