Guys, looking for some tyres for my new wheels. Thinking of sticking with Conti Mountain Kings as they've been pretty good so far on my current wheels. What widths should I go for? Current set are both 2.2, not sure if I should go for 2.4. Mavic seem to recommend 2.3 max. Would I get away with a 2.4?
Should I go same width front/rear or wider on one?
Riding is mainly trail centres, fire roads and single track.
Cheers

If you fit tyres that are too wide for the rims you'll get tyre wall roll and the handling will be "squishy".

If anything - I've found wider on the front works for me - ie I've a 2.4 chunkymonkey front and a Smorg 2.25 on the rear.
Theory being loads of grip up front, better rolling/lighter on rear.

Cheers chaps. Will stick with the 2.2's.
Unless anyone knows of a good allrounder that comes in 2.3? (And doesn't cost a fortune).

I honestly wouldn't look any further than a Hans Dampf - depends what your definition of a fortune is?

You'll be fine with a 2.4 on the front. Put that on there and a 2.2 on the rear and you'll be flying.

I've got shitty stock Merida rims on the S/S and they have taken the 2.4 chunks no probs.

My CrankBro's wheels officially state that 2.3 are the max width, you can usually get away with a size larger anyway.
I've got a 2.4 Trail King on the front and a 2.4 Mountain King on the rear of mine, rolls fast enough for everything I want it to do!

2.35 magic mary front and 2.35 hans dampf rear
wouldn't go any bigger than that with scwhalbe as they blow up big, my 2.3 hans dampf was bigger than my 2.5 maxxis minion

Cheers guys. Looking to spend no more that £40/pair. Might well stick with the Conti's and try a wider one up front.

Try and push your budget to £50. Get a Conti Trail King 2.4 with the Black Chilli compound, seriosuly can't recommend that tyre enough.

Cheers for the heads-up ackers. Noticed you post after I'd ordered a pair though - doh. Let us know how they perform though. Might need another 2.2 as not sure about the 2.4 up front yet. Can you pm me the details?

The HD's are a great tyre, tbf mate - totally reliable, but I am looking forward to trying the Minions and seeing what all the fuss is about. Trouble with liking the HD's so much is that I see no reason to try another brand, unless it's the only option on a new bike, which this will be.

Got them on the Mighty Merida mate - they are ok but a bit heavy and draggy. Grip ok though. Looking forward to trying the Maxxis as up to now I have been a confirmed Schwalbe fanboy.

Will be ordering at the end of the month, as long as the test ride goes well on the 25th. I'm going for the Zero.1 so I need to wait for payday to get the extra moola required. So allowing an extra day for them to set it up tubeless, it'll be about a 4 day lead time, which is very good, tbf. Should have the bike first week in April, hopefully.
