Showcasing some of the best trails in the North East !
27 miles ..I have done all of these tracks and trails as parts of other rides ..but it has taken me close on 18 years to realise that this could be cobbled together to make a truly classic route !
If any of you guys who live further afield want to get out of bed early to tackle this ..I can promise it will be well worth your time and effort!
It starts at Whitley Chapel ...which is a few miles south west of Hexham and can be accessed from the A68 to the south and the A69 coming from the west ( to Hexham) .
The ride :
Leave Whitley Chapel on a long climb by road to Kings Law plantation where road turns to stony bridleway to Hangman Hill ...straight over Pikely Rigg past the shooting cabin on Tedham Moss, Green Hill to drop down to Fell View on the B6295 .
Turn right then immediately left onto a very minor road crossing the river to climb past Hammershield to a T-Junction where we turn right and climb up Swinhope Moor on the road for approx 2.5 km to turn right onto Carrshield Moor and then right again onto what we know as the Black Way but the map calls Issac's Tea trail ( fantastic drop ) ..for 3.5 km until the rough stuff turns to road where we turn left to Knock Shield / Knockburn and follow this to a T -Junction turning right to another T with the B 6295 turning left and first right to climb on a very minor road to a gate where the track turns to b/way to Stobb Cross where we turn right follow the bridleway all the way to make our second visit to Hangman Hill where we carry straight on to Harwood Shield .
Turn right and climb for approx 1km to turn left on a ( ahem ) f.p ..which I'm sure is a genuine mistake and it should be b/way!! Follow this to join Carriers Way all the way to the edge of Slaley Forest where a B.O.A.T. ( not on older maps ) drops you down to a crossroads to turn left past Viewley to cross the burn and turn right at the road to return to Whitley Chapel .
Some technical ups and downs and a true epic !
Already confirmed ...Colin , Paul, Dave & Jean, Graham ...anyone else ?
