I know one thing Andy - I'm with you. I'd rather spend money on a decent bike than a flash car, all day long.

Funds allowing ..I'd like both ...it's a different driving experience in a quality , luxury, fast car ..using almost entirely the same reasoning as folk have used for buying a quality bike ...

An interesting thread with a good collection of valid responses. My take: Although in most peoples eyes cars are a status indicator, you can get something flash on credit so for me it doesn't say much. Due to congested roads I drive only when I have to so I have a old and mundane car which is worth less than my bike - or even my watch I think status is less of an issue with bikes. Only another rider would recognise the high end stuff. We are more likely to buy expensive bikes for our own pleasure than for status. I suppose a nice bike reflects our slightly different outlook and priorities. Money well spent! Don't bring watches into it lol, I try to keep them quiet with stealth buying lol

Don't you need a different car to carry each bike? That's what I told the wife, didn't work though!

Not for me mate - I don't get a thrill from driving a car, never have never will. Box on wheels totally dominated by Rozzers, speed cameras and jammed roads. I realise I am probably in a minority there though, or there wouldn't be programmes like Top Gear or Fifth Gear on telly.

I might agree with you more if I didn't live in an area where it's still possible to have a decent driving experience .. There is a lack of rozzers , speed cameras and congestion ..and some unbelievably good " driving " roads ..

You're lucky to get more than 10 yards without a speed camera on main roads in the midlands - and on the quieter lanes you've got roadies riding two a feckin breast

To me, cars and bike, it's about taking something and making it personal to me.
What really annoys me though it the people that won't give you the time of day because you ether ride too nice or too cheap a bike! Idiots!

Good thread. It's all a bit subjective - as zulu said we all have a figure in our heads. Will a £1.5k bike ride better than my upgraded £500 Halfords hardtail? Yes it will, will it make me a better rider - slightly. Interesting that cars and watches have also been mentioned. I was heavily into watches and at one point had close to 30...... I traded up and reduced my collection to around 10. Does my Rolex tell the time any better than my G-Shock? Not really - if anything the casio is more accurate and it has the date too..... But like bikes that's not why we buy/own them. Each to there own.

I would if I wasn't in the process of selling and buying a new house.......... on the cards for next year though

If I spent 3000 k on a bike I don't think I would b any faster on a 7 k bike .... But if it your hobbie and you can afford it then why not I didn't judge any one on the trails no matter wot they are riding as they are out there having fun I started on a halfords special;)

I've honestly never met anyone like that - or not to my knowledge anyway. I do ride with a bloke who's got a 7k bike and I do ignore him most of the time, but that's nothing to do with his ride, he just mostly talks bollocks.

To me it's function weighed against value.
I've had a sports car pre kiddies and I enjoyed the sensation of the acceleration and nimble handling with Arsenal affixed a few inches above the floor. It didn't take long before i weighed up a developing bad back and lack of boot space against the thrills and went from a celiica to a Volvo estate.
If I had plenty of wedge I'd rather have something understated like a Bmw m3
Back to the topic of bikes. Again I m looking for function for relative value. So if there's small percentage performance or weight saving over one group set say xt to xtr I'm happy with xt. Id rather build something up or make changes from stock if i can to tweak where I think it matters such as good wheels. Again if I can get strong and light wheels without run into 400/500 I will even if I could buy some of the leading brands in carbon. I think one bad smash will break the beat of them so it's risk against benefit.
I wouldnt spend much more 3500 in one go even if I end up making changes later but I don't think bad of anybody that spends 10k£ if they want. Again I think it's a lot to get nicked or insure and think it's maybe 5/10% benefit over a 4/5k£ bike if I'm not racing ews or world cups any time soon it's not worth it to me.
As for the bronson to me it's a great fit for the componentry you have beans and will make a killer machine. Just as capable maybe as the mega but a whole lot lighter and easier to pedal all day I would imagine.

Both good bikes, If it was my do it all bike it would be a bronson for me. Nomad if you already had a shorter travel option.
Not seen Humphrey yet but bored stiff hence I'm on here.

Why...? Because you only live once and drugs are bad for you...lol It doesn't make you a brilliant rider, but surely does help on many aspects. It's like any other sport, where the gear plays its role.
