Okay, so a Camelbak Mule may have found itself on my Christmas list. I've got fed up of using bottles now without a cage, and my current bag has seen better days. I'm using caribiner clips to hold the zips together so my stuff doesn't fall out!
I've had cheapo hydro packs before, but the bladder got mouldy and tasted pretty foul after awhile, so that ended up in the bin. With the camelbak being abit more expensive, i want to try and keep it in decent condition, so how does everyone look after their packs?
Is the cleaning kit worth the money, do you use tablets, do you freeze your packs when not in use,
let me know!

When i used to use one i only ever put water in the bladder, so after every use i just emptied it then froze it till the next time.

I got a cheap cleaning kit from sports direct. Usually just give it a good wash and put it in the freezer. Give the tube a scrub/pull through every now and again and give the bite valve a good wash in warm soapy water.

Don't add sugary additives ..(I use nunn tabs only ) ... When emptying the bladder remember to blowback down the tube to get rid of any drink still in there . Half fill the empty bladder with boiled water from the kettle ..secure the cap on and shake it back and forth . Empty and allow to air dry .. I have never frozen mine ..

Camelbaks are a bit annoying to clean but with the brush with a bend in its OK. When mine died of old age I picked up an evoc one, because you can turn the whole thing inside out!
But yeah boiling water the same day as you use it alcohol damages the seals an leaving it a week will stain the plastic.

i empty mine and leave it until the next ride. Only ever use water in it. I give it a thorough clean now and then. Done that for 5 years and still haven't died of anything yet.

I've never had to clean any of my Camelbaks, when I get in from a ride I just empty them then stick them straight in the freezer. I also never use anything other than water in them.

I've got a Raptor now ( lovely little thing - we called him Dave ) but I cleaned the Camelbaks the same. As above - no sugary shoite I use High 5 zero. Every 3 or 4 uses a good swill with tap water, then bung in a milton sterilizing tablet (same as the ones you sterilize babbies bottles with), you can get them from the Pound shop for errr...a pound... Leave it for 15 mins, empty then in the freezer til the next ride, if that's going to be more than 3 or 4 days away. Job. Done.

Cheers guys!
Think I'll just give it a rinse with water then freeze or air it out. I'll Get some of them sterilising tabs but only do them once a month, as it seems like they're not really needed
I'll only be drinking water or water with high five tabs, so there shouldn't be a problem hopefully!
Nice one

I found that a Deuter bag with a Vaude bladder was cheaper than Camelback (the bladder and the Deuter Race bag comes to 50 quid). The bladder also came with the cleaning kit but I've never used it in over 2 years...just fill, empty and freeze. I believe freezing is quite important to avoid the smell/taste but also it might not be good for you if damp starts to form inside the tube and then you drink it.
