I dunno why, but I just decided to go check on the bike after yesterday's ride. I had my helmet hanging off the bars, and as I looked down something seemed to catch my eye There was in fact a small chunk missing from the rear right of the helmet. Now this was confusing, as I haven't had a big crash, and as far as I can remember, most of my crashes either happen sliding out or going over the bars at slow speeds! I decided to check the helmet over, and on closer inspection, I found: A dent on the top of the helmet which you can only see it in the right light or by running your hand over it; a crack around the front left fixing point for the strap; a crack down the back of the helmet behind the strap, aswell as small scuffs on the top of the helmet near the visor. I've never noticed any of these before. Cosmetically, the helmet looked fine. Its only because I checked it that I found these defects, which would massively weaken the safety of the helmet. I know you're meant to replace after a crash, but I've never had a crash that I thought was damaging to the helmet. I think it's important that everyone should go check theirs now, especially after one of our own forum members recently had a big crash where his helmet most definitely saved his life. My helmet in question is the Giro Feature. Ive attached some photos to show the damage. I will now be looking at another helmet, I may stick with the Giro, or I might get something else, however what I know for sure is that I will be regularly checking the helmets condition.
