Ok so I am thinking about a turbo trainer to help keep fitness levels up over winter. I tend not to get out much over winter due to work and crap weather. I have been looking at the tracx blue matic t2650. I dont want to spend a fortune, just want something I can use a couple of times a week. I know I will need to get a tyre and tube aswell.
Just wondering what your thoughts and experiences are on cheap trainers, any good or cheap and crap. Also should a 1.35 tyre fit in my current rim ok (dunno its width but running a 2.25), and will I need a mat ( not worried about sweat, more oil/dirt that the missus will go mental at).

I use mine quite a bit with the road bike its good to spin for an hour an not have to worry if the weathers foul, trainers not bad. oil etc just get a mat for it I use an old gym mat which dulls the noise a touch too. A wheel blocks handy too to keep your position good. Tyre wise thatll be fine, you can get trainer specific tyres but ive been using mine for years with a plain slick

Cheers step. Will a mtb tyre fit in a wheel block, dont want the hassle of changing the front when I want to use it. Its payday on fri so if its still on offer I reckon it will by my chrimbo to myself.

Andy - same boat as you, having a break from the shit weather but I though 'outside of the box' on this one. Rather than spend a feckin load on a turbo trainer (they are a rip off, imo) I went and picked up a cross trainer yesterday. My thinking is, rather than just spin your legs, a cross trainer is particularly good for core strength - obviously a biggie in our sport - and you are getting a much more overall training regime. Had my first go yesterday and my legs and arms are still stiff today, going on it every day from now til Crimbo (apart from if we get a few dry days then I'll break out the bikes). I also picked mine up for 75 quid (RRP 799) off fleabay in almost new condition - one of these...foldable as well and really heavy duty..just an alternative...

Zulu, were you wearing a mask when you stole that. A bargain. When i used to go to the gym for my fitness those machines and the treadmill etc would bore me after 15 mins, thats why I love the bike. Hope the trainer doesnt end up a dust catcher but need to keep up the fitness somehow.

I, believe it or not, actually enjoy it. A good selection of tunes on the player, a knowledge that every stride I make is making me fitter...honestly to me it's better than standing in the front window moaning that the weather is shit and doing feck all.
Some buy a road bike and enjoy it - I do this. Horses for courses, it deffo won't gather dust.

About £150 all in, tyre, tube mat etc. Zulu by the time we re emerge from our winter hibernation we will slim, trim and full of energy........... (I will settle for not burstin a lung).
