part way through my last ride aboard the Bird zero I noticed that the paint had been rubbed off for quite a large area and partially down through the undercoat to the raw alloy. The paint around it felt something like what could be best described as a gritty paste. This only happened on one small area and rest of the frame is immaculate, it was raining and I probably rubbed it with muddy waterproof trousers whilst climbing out of the saddle but the other side was okay and surely this shouldn't happen anyway during one ride. so I sent an email with a couple of photos to the contact address at Bird and a fellow called Dan, one of the proprieters I think, emailed back during the xmas holiday to say the team would review it when they got back to the office. He emailed back again this morning with a no nonsense offer to replace the frame with a new own as quickly as I like and he just ask that aft I build it back up I return the faulty one so they can investigate it. I called him to discuss further and it appears to be a one off that maybe hadn't cured properly and I believe this and being in the manufacturing game can appreciate that sometims there can just be a random blip that makes it through and doesn't necessarily point towards a reoccurring issue. So I'll have the same colour back with new headset etc and start again from next Monday. i don't want to dwell on the actual paint issue complaint wise, as I say I'm sure that it's a one off and he confirmed that they spec out the most robust paint finish that is available so I can't really fault them. More a note to say that I found their customer service approach to be excellent and a breath of fresh air that they don't have the perspective of you prove the fault before we doing anything about it more so that they are sorry for the inconvenience and now just want to check what may have gone wrong if it as, no discussion or hint of blame on my part. thanks Bird, and if they get the Aeris improved looks wise (only my opinion) some way down the road I may consider a full suss from them one day.

Good on them for not ruffling your feathers ..that's really eggsellant service . The Aeris based purely on the reviews that I have read would definitely be a contender if I ever get around to buying a new one ..

They reckon it could may have missed or not been cured properly after painting.

Will they cover the expense of postage and stripping and putting together again? You could be talking at least 100 quid to put together and postage to send the frame back!?

They've posted and will arrange collection.
I bought it frame and head set only from them and built it up. I'll strip it and build it back up, same frame and size with external cable routing shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. I might wrap it this time.
All their frames have a life time warranty, I don't think they cover any bodies expense if they wanted to use a shop to build a bike for them.

I wish I could build my bike myself...lol...I'm sure most of things are pretty straight forward and the most difficult is probably headset, bottom bracket and make sure everything is aligned. But still...it's going to go down to Evans like last time!

rlo it's all fairly straight forward. Only thing I got done by the LBS was get the headset cups pressed in on my sons bike - and only because I couldn't get them to go in straight. Look through the build threads on here and look at a few vids on youtube. It's really satisfying watching it come together and knowing that you built it. You can get pretty decent tools by shopping around and they always come in handy for tinkering.

But still...it's going to go down to Evans like last time! It's not too hard to put a bike together, common sense goes along way. If your handy around tools then you'll be fine, I've built up 3 bikes now and I enjoy doing it. If you don't know how to do something then there's loads of tutorials on YouTube, pinkbike etc. I wouldn't be taking my bike to Evans for it doing though, heard too many horror stories.

I believe them when they say it's a one off Kirky, as the paint on mine (which I've had a bit longer than you?) does seem pretty tough and it still looks like new.
They are good blokes to deal with - if I ever buy another full suss it will be the Aeris - though tbh, I probably won't as I do love the Chief.

Don't do demo days really Gaz as I am happy with what I have at the moment - plus - I ain't riding them atm anyway!
This infection just will not go away. Doctor said it's likely to be cat aids - bad cat aids as well, not the good cat aids.

I wouldn't be taking my bike to Evans for it doing though, heard too many horror stories. I have complete trust on the guys at Evans in Sheffield in particular Lee who is the manager of that department and will put it together. He did my Van Nicholas before and they always looked after me! I will try and do as much as possible myself.

If you know the bloke who runs the shop and he's built your previous bike then that's great, least you know what your getting. Although I have read horror stories about people's bikes being lost when they've been left with Evans, and where parts have not been fitted correctly.

I must admit it may be a touch of a generalisation gained more from other peoples negative comments rather than my own experience but Evans would be in the bottom three of my thinking along with decathlon and Halfords. Shouldn't tar all with the same brush I know. Odd that the store manager is building bikes rather than their mechanics though, have you checked if the same mechanic would be working on your bike as the last time. I gather the mechanics don't stick around for longer at the larger chain stores.
Don't mean to concern you, but wouldn't want you to get less than those quality parts you've gathered deserve.

At that store (and assume to all Evans stores) they have a store (sales) manager and a workshop manager, who is also the head mechanic, working daily and supervising things. He will be building mine again, has been giving me some advice on a few things and offered to build it all for 60 quid (since I've spent a good amount of money there of course)!? To be honest, you can have a good or bad experience on every store and the Internet is usually full of the negative ones. The good thing about Evans that give me a lot of confidence is that if anything were to go wrong, they will sort it out straight away, many times for free. On that store at least, they have great staff.

Bird seem a really brilliant company... I was really tempted buying the Bird.. But I bought something more "me"... If I was after a regular hard-tail, second to a Cotic... This would be my weapon of choice.
