OK so I am about to fit a new chain etc and got thinking. I know some of you swear by dry lubes such as squirt but I have always used finishline wet as it is always wet or damp at best in Irish woodland so never fancied my chances with a 'dry' lube. But with new chain and cassette being fitted it might be time to give it a go while everything is new and clean and if it cuts down on the cleaning all the better. So what's the collectives thought...wet or dry?

I only use wet lube on all my bikes nowadays. But I clean and relube after every rides so it suits me. On the subject of lubes I've spent a fortune over the years on most of the top lubes but have to say the new wiggle own brand lifeline wet lube is awesome and at less than 3 quid a tube it's a bloody bargain... My 2 cents worth anyway hope that helps

Wet lube for me to, currently using Pro Gold extreme but just ordered some rock and roll extreme. Both of these don't attract the dirt like conventional wet lubes do.

I use to swear by the White Lightning Wet Ride lube, used it all year round. Then when i went 1x10 on my old bike, i decided to give Squirt a try whilst everything was clean. I havent turned back since. Its just better!

Maybe I should consider this Squirt since everything at the moment is new! However the KMC chain, even though new is greased/oiled at the moment! Does this mean I'll have to degrease it first before applying Squirt?

Squirt is great. I'm not using it at the moment though, purely because my LBS don't stock it and I had run out. Currently using Muc Off C3 which is also good, but much more messy than the squirt.

Another vote for Squirt, or any other wax-type lube. Even in the deepest mud & shite all it takes is a gentle hose & all clean. In the summer just as good, but without the need for a hose!

I've got Muc-Off wet & dry lubes. I only really use the wet lube now as every time over the summer I put dry lube on it pissed it down.....

Does this mean I'll have to degrease it first before applying Squirt? Probably best too, it's only a 5 minute job and you won't have to do it again, you'll never have a dirty drive train again then, all you do after a ride is dry the chain (naturally if you want) soft wire brush it and reapply the squirt (in summer I can go as much as 4 or 5 dry rides between applying) winter I do it after every ride though. Having said that though, last new chain it wasn't oily just the factory grease and I put the squirt on top as I was short on time, gotta say it's been fine, I think the factory grease/wax wears away eventually and squirt just replaces it. I would say though, if the new chain feels 'oily', do a proper degrease.

Chainsaw bar oil , biodegradable and very cheap (especially as I have loads to go with the 2 chainsaws ), can't decide on squirt , seems to keep things clean but chains don't seem to last as long when using it

Well it looks like the wets have it. Might try dry in the summer though to see what I think (if I can be arsed degreasing everything). Thanks for the replies.

True that, but that's a whole other thread. It will be finishline for now as it's what I have. But will no doubt try one of those mentioned above when I run out.

I only have Finish Line as well, dry and wet, but this thread made me realise how shit they are! It's like a magnet to dirt!
