What's the point in that then, just so it does away with the rear mech etc?
They'd be no bodging that back together if you had a mechanical on the trails.

Saw this earlier and read about the pros and cons...not convinced specially in muddy conditions like in the UK and the frame is hideous...but isn't this a bit like Rohloff hubs?
On the 29ers, it is true...more and more these days it looks like they are here to stay and you can notice a huge effort from manufacturers and designers to improve their geometry...dare i say, make them the best choice out there, at least when it comes to some reviews.
Would love a fat bike just for funned snowy days.

That looks horrendously over engineered and just more stuff to 'go wrong', especially in our weather.
No thanks.

You're welcome to try either of my Fat-bikes... Wait a minute...?! You have TWO? ? Now that takes the piss and I'm really jealous... Fat bikes are my guilty pleasure...i would love to own one...i even thought about it before getting a rigid 29er (which i will pick up at the end of this month), but since the idea was to get a bike to commute to work, gym, etc, a Fat bike is probably not the best idea. that bike from the side, really looks not very nice...bad proportions and loads of bits of frame here and there in various directions...my opinion at least.

I think gear boxes will be here to stay, at the moment its still early days, i was looking at various models online the other day and there's some serious engineering inside. I've had a couple of ideas for a design so i have been messing about on a CAD programme seeing what i could come up with. Rear hub would be the best place for the gearbox IMO but the limitation in size means that most use weird frame designs at the moment.
There's so many advantages imo, think of the money and time you spend, replacing at least: a chain or two a year, a cassette and chain-ring(s) every 1 to 2 years, then the cost of smashing up a rear mech, ive wrecked 2 now, and my current one is looking worse for wear. Belt driven is maintenance free, and the life time will be much greater, plus due to the sealed nature, shifting would be much more reliable in the winter.
People on bikes are against anything that brings change now days. We'll see in 5/10 years what people are saying, its either that or SRAM will bring out a 1x12 speed drivetrain, which people will also be against!!!

simplicity, reliability and maintain-ability...will always win. Needless weight and engineering... We'll all be taking our bikes to a service centre! If you can't maintain your bike, you're not a mountain biker...

Haha! That's ridiculous ..that's like saying you can't be a mountain biker until you have gone up a mountain in a pair of roadie shoes ..now who would do that ....?

If you can't maintain your bike, you're not a mountain biker... Expand on maintain your bike...?! I have to admit I'm quite a noob when it comes to maintain parts like headset or Bottom bracket for example! Wouldn't even attempt to dismantle a fork or a shock! I've set up a goal in the next weeks to service my spd pedals and strip them down...if I don't cock it up, I'll be very happy!

I'm in the same boat ..I simply don't have an " engineering " brain . Maintenance in my book is cleaning, lubing and checking over the bike ..anything more than that and it goes to a bike mechanic with the relevant experience to put it right . Even after 18 years of riding I have little to no interest in building / taking apart / repairing my bike ..that just doesn't float my boat ...

Haha! That's ridiculous ..that's like saying you can't be a mountain biker until you have gone up a mountain in a pair of roadie shoes ..now who would do that ....? It's a statement suggesting that the gearbox will be practically unmaintable whilst on the trails... it either needs to be bullet proof, or we'll have to carry a spare gearbox and belt. Not a dig at those who can't or chose not to maintain their bikes.

Headsets and bottom brackets can appear quite technical, but I assure you.. they're very easy to maintain, by even the least experienced person. Granted you might require some specialist tools. I guarantee, once you've done it once, you'll be doing it yourself onwards... and have spare money for upgrades...I'm more than happy to help.

I'd consider these very important as a mountain biker to have.
