This is something that always annoys me when riding. I'm using DMR Vaults and riding in a set of Vans Old Skools, which are wide skate style shoes
Anyway, where abouts do you place your foot on the pedal? I have the ball of my foot pretty much central on the pedal, and anything else feels weird, but the shoe is slightly wider further back which makes me feel like i should be moving my foot slightly further forward and having it more central???

Pedal axle behind the ball of the foot, whether clipped in (slam the cleats back in the slots) or on flats.

Feet on pedals. Hands on bars. Arse on seat. Heart in mouth. Works for me

One less problem when you ride SPD's....lol! Try them...after a few stupid falls you won't go back!

Done abit of googling after I put this up and found a video, same advice as abov, ball of foot infront of axel not on it. I think ever since I've started riding I've had my foot in the 'wrong' position so that's why anything else I try feels weird. Will definitely be making an effort to get it right now and it should help out on the trails
Was tempted to get SPD's, but I'm loving the Vaults atm and I like the freedom of flats. Apparently you learn bad technique aswell riding SPD's, especially when learning to hop and jump...

Ideally with your feet on the pedals. I tried using my shins once. Still have the scars. Follow getonyourbike's advice, he's probably one of the most qualified people here to offer advice.

Wouldn't go near a pair of flats personally ... Been on Time A.T.A.C pedals ( not the same ones) for over 10 years now and have kept my shins intact ... I've also seen the horrific damage done to others by the pins on the instruments of torture quite a few of you masochistic types seem to favour ...

I've seen you ride Neil and you obviously know your stuff but....you should never say no...and I love the 'freedom' of flats. This from someone who started off on SPD's.....I personally will never go back to clipped in...

Time Alium , cheap , bombproof and don't rip your legs apart , same reason I run 2+ bash on crank , circular saw blade near my legs is not what I want
