while touching on this subject in another post it got me thinking of an article in one of the mags, which was written by nick craig the pro cx and mtbxc rider. he went on to say that the best way to improve climbing fitness is to just climb at your own comfortable pace and the more you do this the more you will improve. as opposed to pushing yourself really hard when perhaps trying to continuously keep up with faster riders. i always thought, that this sounded odd as surely pushing yourself would be the BEST way to improve? but who am i to argue against a pro's advice. then while watching the bike channel this afternoon, on 'the greatest climbs' the two roadies talking about the same subject basically repeated the exact same advice as nick craig.............definately worth remembering this i think.

Things never get easier, you just get faster.
Your body will get used to it, so you'll push yourself a little harder to get that same feeling, rinse and repeat.

People get to hung up on fitness, just go out there and ride your bikes, at the end of the day if you are smiling you'll do it again the week after, etc, etc, the fitness side will just coming naturally, it's the grin factor that will make it memorable.

Hmmm .. Intresting .. I always plodded along could not go any faster up hills I would see jay sarky will hill all disappear in to the distance , best thing I did was drop some weight .. Oh and keep cycling Ride once a week it's good for you Ride twice a week it's even better for you Ride three times a week and your defo going to improve .. But not just about miles it's about how you ride them .. I try endurance miles on one or two rides a week .. Trying to keep your heart rate at around 130... Not as easy as it sounds as soon as you see a hill it wants to go though the roof One day I try and do thresh hold spinning as fast as you can for 5 min intervals and keeping your heart rate at about 160 .. Laxtice acid builds up just after that .. Great for helping you to burst speed when and tetchy climbs and you need to spin fast for short bursts .. Any way I'm talking bollocks but nothing new Enjoy you're riding keep a smile on your face

I think the advice is based around the fact if you go riding all the time with people who are faster up the hills then you will get disheartened and it will, in time, put you off.
It did for me any ways, for quite a while I went out with my mates and could never ride as much as they did. They were rocking two 2000ft+ rides a week, plus some road miles and it was always going to end up an exercise in ass kicking. Which put me off and as a result I didn't ride as much. There is only so many times you can watch your mates do one up a hill, and be ready to set off again at the top the second you haul your self up before you loose interest.
If it's any help I found the strava climbing challenge helped, I did the on last month and have actually noticed an improvement in my climbing. I still cough my guts up and want to die, but slightly faster than previously. And I don't get left behind anymore which is nice

...or join a group of owld farts like our group ..average age well over 55 and feel good as you pass us by ...lol.. Mind you that's not totally true as Russell will destroy most of what's put in front of him ! A lot has to do with how much you put into it ... Personally I'm happy in my own skin ..there are loads of riders out there who's fitness levels I'm not going to get anywhere near partly due to health issues ..but no problem just keep on riding over that hill ..you can have my admiration but not my company ...

that was my point. just keep pedaling away at a steady pace and your fitness will improve without thinking much about it.what a brilliant way of keeping fit this mtb milarky.

I've got some great mates who I'd love to ride with regularly but I can't as they are so in front me fitness wise it's painful - so I tend to ride alone or with other lads who are at my level. It's no good getting disheartened - sometimes you have to accept where you are and then at least you can enjoy your riding. Be happy in your own skin is right - especially as you are cresting above and beyond 50. IMO, loike.

He was flying up climbs and I was busting a gut trying to keep up and feeling deflated when I got there. Really stopped enjoying it. Was really round about the time we were all on about having a slump

There was some pay back with my tale, the main reason I didn't ride as much was because I had just had a kid. Any ways now he is older, I get more time and they have all just had kids. So I am the one riding bikes more, it's quite fun
