How is that achieved ? the NW fits directly to the spider where the big ring would have been, The spacers I am going to fit will move it towards where the middle ring would have been.

The only other thing I can think then is how many spacer rings have you got on your drive side of your bottom bracket ? Can you chuck some pics up to help ? I need a new chain for mine, did you need a bigger chain to compensate for the bigger ring or need to add links in ?

The chain I used was only a couple of rides old so I just added 2 links.

Yes your right it is where the middle ring was originally. Rear mec is a Zee with a longer B screw fitted and the cassette is a new XT It shifts up and down perfectly.

Can I just ask why it's an issue if it only happens when pedalling backwards?

Are you using a dedicated single crankset? Or converted 2x or 3x ... Reason being... The 1x crank sets allow for a more intermediate chain line! I had to use spaces between the crank arms and ring to keep it running true...

Can I just ask why it's an issue if it only happens when pedalling backwards? It isn't, just my OCD Although I think it's a chain line issue and this would put undue wear on the drive train. I like things to be right.

I had to use spaces between the crank arms and ring to keep it running true... It's a 3 x converted. That's why I'm going to fit spacers and although it will improve the chain line I'm not 100% sure it resolve the backpedaling issue. We will see.

I had the chain line issue, but I have the original One-up system running on XTR, I hope you get it sorted soon mate... The Peaks aren't the same without it!...

Last idea before I run out - does the zee mech have a clutch? Back pedalling creates slack in the top run of the chain - would a clutch reduce mech this?

It has a clutch - on or off same result.

What chain do you use, Will?
Just wondering if maybe you use a directional chain like some Shimano do that have to be fitted the right way round.
Maybe they don't like going bakuds!

Well I fitted 2mm spacers to move the chainring to the left (closer to the BB) and guess what - it made no difference. Not surprised as the gap between the 36t and the 40t is 6mm. What it has done is, improve the chain line which was the greater concern. After trawling the net, the consensus seems to be that it is a design problem on Hope's part - I tend to agree. I might drop them a line and see what their reply is. Thanks to all that helped

Got my chain on today and on the back peddle the chain comes off the 42t cog on the back of mine, the chain line looks wrong but in the middle of the cassette its ok, think it's something you've just gotta live with fella.
