Hi chaps .. Question for ya I think my orange cabinet is running a 70mm stem , just wonder if by putting a shorter one on say 50mm will it make much different to the handling , as in the bike mags they are all banging on about having shorter stems fitted.. I know the front end will come up more , when riding up hills steeps in climbs !!! Just wondered if it will help with faster turning or flicking the bike about more.. Ps it's on big wheels 29ers Thanks for any help given (and no I don't want to sell it to get smaller wheels ).

It'll steer quicker.. It'll be a lot sharper than it is now!
All my stems are short! What you need to think about though is by fitting a shorter stem, your riding position will change slightly!
You may need to move your saddle back a bit to compensate!
A few people I know have fitted shorter stems because they thought it was the 'in thing' and ended up with backache during every ride!

I'd say go for it, improves handling and confidence on the downhills as it's easier to get your weight further back.
As for the moving of your seat rearward I completely disagree, your leg position is your leg position, all it affects is your pedal stroke, putting the seat further back will make the front lift more on the climbs, a more forward climbing position helps no end as you're closer to being in the stood climbing position, with your weight over the front wheel.
Look at how steep the seat angles are nowadays, I used to run my joplin offset post in reverse to bring the seat more forward until I got an inline dropper. Looked crap, worked a treat!

I use a 50mm stem, purely because it scores an 8 on the gaffney numerical assessment (of) radness scale. A 70mm stem only scores a 4.
No idea if it is any better or owt though.

Haha! No problem, I've spent lots of time getting the bike set right, and replicate my road bike set up seat and cleat wise (had a pro setup last year) I got a mint condition secondhand thomson elite x4 50mm for £36 off eBay, there aren't much better, and that's less than half price. It's one of the best mods you'll make!

Well fitted a Thomson 50mm stem, I didn't think it would make much difference .. All I can say is how wrong , I was front end feels so much more planted , feels more blanced for me.. Plus move my seat forward about 5mm just make sure the front end is not pointing skywards seems to have worked a treat . Very happy now with the bike .

I went from using a 70mm on my old bike to putting a 55mm on my ragley and the handling was massively improved, however I also put on wider handle bars which also make all the difference, lovely setup

Mats been toying with the idea of putting a shorter stem on his stumpy 29er (his stumpy has a 75mm stem on it currently). To see if he would like a shorter stem he's put mine on his bike (mines 60mm) and so i can still ride mine he stuck his 75mm on it. To test it out we've been over the monkey tonight and i dont like it, my bike didnt want to go around the switch backs mat on the other hand got on really well with my stem and im scared i wont get it back for the weekend

Interesting read .. Im running the standard 70mm stem on the Cinder Cone. When I went for a ride the other week with a friend the first thing he said was that I should get a shorter stem. May well look into a 50mm based on whats in here!

I had a 90mm Syntace stem on mine, waaaaay to much for an AM bike with a 67 degree headangle IMO. Swapped it out for a 50mm Hope stem within a week and it just transformed the handling.
