Never had it before in my life but I suppose at 54 and having always been a manual worker, it was odds on.
Laid up with it and it's horrible, not just because I can't go riding but with everything. Doctors aren't much good - some stretching exercises and ibuprofen, I know there's not much else they can do at first, but frustrating - I understand what Gaz and others go through now. S'pose I've just got to take it steady and wait it out.

I'm glad I've not had any significant back issues.... It's the whole physiological pain that it comes with... I feel for you!...

I have various back issues myself, but OK just now. It can be a right downer. I used to go to physio etc but found acupuncture to work the best. Always thought it was mumbo jumbo until I tried it. Made a huge difference in just 3 sessions. If you need someone to take care of the bikes until you are better I can send a courier to pick them up.......

Cheers you pair - early stages yet and if I'm lucky the bulging disc should 're-seat' itself according to the nurse - but if it doesn't I'm up for giving anything a go - acupuncture or whatever. It's summer and I can't ride, this is not an acceptable situation

That's a bad sign of things to come! Look after it... Long term back issues can start at a young age... And if you're thrashing around on a bike... Could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Nowt worse Pez ...sympathy and hope you make a full recovery .. I spent a month lying on a board downstairs in my early twenties after an " accident" walking back home with mates from a nightclub ..larking about ..my back got slammed onto metal railings which fronted a bus stop ..never known pain like it ! Still get the odd day here and there where I can get nowt done for it ..but thankfully not that often ... Good luck!

Cheers Hodgy - appreciated. Jack same as you - I was a bricklayer from 17 years old to my mid 20's then moved into fitting lifts, then Toyota...all heavy work and now I've got a job which is 12 hours on my feet and still lumping stuff about - amazing really I've been untouched til now.
At least once I am better it'll make me appreciate riding more!

I screwed my back in my early 30's. Been seeing a chiropractor fairly regular over the last 10 years or so. Makes a huge difference. Chin up Pez!

I've had back trouble for years, seen various dr's, physio's and chiropractors, Been diagnosed with various things and treated to no avail. Best thing I've ever done was bought a new bed and started stretching every morning and night. its not completely better but helped a hell of a lot. also if you work sat down for long periods at a time, get a decent chair and get it positioned correctly.

mate...ive been suffering from back pain for years...some months ago i was in a really bad state, had loads of physio/ostheo (which does help) the relief the pain...however, you just need to rest and it goes...usually it is just an impingement on one of the multiple nerves you have and until the swelling doesn't go, you will feel it. Ian (from the forum) showed me some good/simple rotating exercises and they did work well. but my suggestion would be, tweak the saddle by a few mm, down, tilt it a bit forward...and rest.

Gaz...forgive me for saying this but I don't agree at all! I think the exact opposite and it is actually not great at all...ice is for injuries and/or pains caused by traumas (bangs/falls/hits) and apparently only in the first 36 hours max...it's actually heat (hot water bottle you want)...10 min on, 5 min off...again and again... Plus ice pack on your back (if on the kidney area) is a really no no!
After today's ride I can feel a twitch too!

A couple of years ago i had pains at the top of my back and didn't really do anything about it, over the course of a few months it got worse and worse. Sitting still was the worst and I really didnt think that people would believe that sitting down to eat a meal or watch tv was more painful than if i gritted my teeth and moved through the initial pain. In the end the pain moved up my neck and started to move down my arm into my hand, so even using tweezers was painful. The OH managed to talk me into using a chiropractor (I had put it off because I was scared of the neck cracking thing). I needed about 5 sessions but it was worth it. It wasn't instant relief like I had hoped but i did see an improvement from the first session. It was a trapped nerve apparently.

Cheers all - G the nurse did say to me ice packs - I thought the same as you and questioned her on it, but she was quite insistent that the ice would help with the swelling in the muscles around my spine. Haven't tried it yet but may well do. Slightly better today but only if I keep moving around, strangely - sit down for more than 5 minutes and it's agony getting up - might go to sleep on the treadmill tonight!

Good luck Gaz, I know you mentioned this last time I saw you (with your group of Laydeee learners) it was that afternoon my back caved in.

this is what you get for continually bending over to check you tyre pressures :-) And if his valve caps are still there and matching... Well ok...I'm no one to argue about it, but my Physio for example who was treating me for the same problem, said not to...only heat and cold (by taking the water bottle out for a few minutes until your back gets to normal temp) and heat again...hot bath and sauna/steam room also help a lot. But like I said, it depends on the injury. If it was cause by a fall or hit for example, ice every time. You can always try both...! Lol Good luck!

It's no fun. I suffer daily and it's a real struggle to not let it get me down. Had an MRI a couple of days ago, so await the outcome. Vodka San Miguel and strong painkillers helps:)

No fella we don't make it as we would have had to fetch our own drinks so thought it wasn't worth it
