May consider it for the winter to keep fitness up, but right now my legs shout "Nooooooo!" That's exactly what it is for me mate - my winter hack - to be used and abused in the mud and snow. not much to break on it and the Chief can have some rest time in the shoite weather. Getting depressed just saying that.

Sorry to bring up the old thread but....
To those who ride SS Rigids, what are they like on general off piste trails. Not the smooth trail center stuff, but the rough, rooty off piste forest trails and rocky bridleways.
As some may know, i have a SS/FG road bike, and i think i'll be able to cope with the gearing, considering i run that at a 52/17 ratio, its just the lack of suspension which frightens me! My XC bike only has 80mm though. If i were to build up a SS, it would be on budget, but i'd make sure it had short stem, wide bars, massive tyres and a slack geo... Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

I've taken mine out on the off piste at Cannock - you just have to alter your riding style a bit - ultimately though it is so rewarding because it is so much harder. I love my Chief but it dumbs down the trails, once you've done a fast rooty descent on a S/S rigid you do feel good about yourself!
I built mine on a budget, almost everything second hand. My old Merida was built around 120mm forks and to keep that lovely slack geom I put 29er rigid forks onto the 26" frame, which kept the geom. A cheap as chips but brilliant for UK trails Chunky Monkey/Smorgasbord tyre set up and Deore brakes and you are mostly there. 720mm bars/50mm stem - all good and a great ride.

Cheers Zulu!
Yeah with my HT, i have to pick lines carefully, but a rigid seems like so much fun... Its so simple, yet so nice!!! I've just been browsing Pinkbike/Ebay... Found a few bits and bobs. Could get Frame, Forks and Wheels for around £130! Already got Seatpost, Saddle, Tyres, Pedals... Cranks, Chain and Sprocket would be £30 max! Then its just bars and stem, which shouldn't be too much.. Brakes are the hard part to find, i wouldnt want to spend more than £40 if possible. Im sure someone on here has a set they could sell! Then its just grips and a few small parts and its done!
Especially in the winter, it would be ideal!

Bitd we all used to ride rigid as boingy forks hadn't been invented , you youngsters have it easy (we only had 1.9 tyres canti brakes and 21 gears on triple setup too !!)
