I struggled badly last winter on the HD's too, in the mud. Ditched them cos of this. The Minion and Ardent pretty good in the gloop though.

A good combo surely is a Mary at the front with High Roller II on the back! If you can get over the OCD fact they are different!? Lol...

In mud maybe but then when you get hard pack involved.... you want something with more tread on the floor.. unless you can afford new tyres for every type of ride your screwed for best tyre haha

that just shows how its alot down to personal preference ( or lots of other variables) i had a hutchinson toro at about the same time and couldnt get on with it. i remember thinking it was a very narrow tyre for its sizing. maybe thats part of why you thought it was a good mud tyre neil?

Correct ...26" x2.1. It cut through everything ..I couldn't comment on the new variants though .

everything that goes around come around . wouldnt be surprised if the trend goes back to slightly narrower tyres sometime soon ...like lots of other trends

Conti Trail King with Black Chili are supposed to be great...would like to try some of those Onza Gwiny too... Looks like at the moment everyone just wants Maxxis...I wonder if that is a Peaty effect!? One thing I can tell you...they are a bastard to set up compared to Schwalbe...the side walls are way harder and the tubeless edge bead is very thick and difficult to get any play...however I suppose it's good for tubeless of course!

I'm quite liking my On-One Chunky Monkey/Smorgasbord combo at the moment. Seems to have handled dry & dusty, damp, muddy, Chase gravel/shiny pebbles and biblical downpours quite well so far.

Tthe best combo i've had, for mud/hard pack/all terrain is the spesh tyres. As i've now 3x sets of tyres, i'll wear some out, sell the others, then go back to the spesh combo. I had a Butcher on the front for a while, I liked it to start with but then really started to realise I was getting thrown off a hell of a lot. It couldn't look at a root without pinging me off

Glynn...if you haven't ordered the Maxxis already, you should really give the Magic Mary a try...what an awesome tyre!? Today i was totally amazed going through some deep roots...it also makes the ride more comfortable. Another thing I found out today is that the faster you go on the bike the better the Fox setup works...its just having the balls to do it faster and faster.
