Sorry for creating yet another Maxxis v the world thread.. but here goes anyway.
My Racing Ralph rear exploded on Friday's night ride which wasn't supposed to be a night ride. Only 3 of 8 had lights and I wasn't one. Must have caught an unilluminated rock which split the sidewall.
I've not really been happy with the SWLABR's. They may be quick, they may be better in the dry, but the rainbow definitely has a beard (geddit?) getting no grip from the Ralph on anything slightly damp, and always a lack of bite from the Nob on't front (but could be the Nob on the saddle is not weighting it enough?)
This is only my 2nd bike and set of tyres. First bike had Maxxis Beaver 29x2.00", and I got so much confidence from them, they cut down through mud and found grip and never slipped unpredictably on a root or rock no matter how off-line I was. This new bike is on 27.5x2.25" tubeless. But I've not read any review of Beavers in 27.5, perhaps they don't work as well as the cart wheel ones. I don't think a fatter tyre will be a good idea due to mud clearance.
Having read as much on here as I can, I am more confused than ever... was thinking Ardent at the back, but which one, EXO, Ardent Race, with Kevlar? I don't really want to be arsed changing TL tyres for winter and summer, let's face it, that could mean swapping tyres every other day in our current shifting climate. And this still leaves me with the Nob on front. As I can't afford replacing both, should I swap the Nob to the back and go for something else up front?
Used a whole sunny day so far reading tyre shoite all over t'place, but hey, neighbours gardens were full of screaming kids anyway..
Whoever wants to confuse me further, and is not bored to death by this subject yet please chip in
