Hello, I thought I would put a post up today after joining the forum last week. I am based around the Edinburgh area and I am currently in the process of getting back into biking after a long layoff from the sport. I decided to join this forum to socialise with likeminded people and to gain technical knowhow. I had intended to post today as I had originally thought I would have picked up my new bike at the weekend. However, after speaking on the phone to a member of staff I was informed that my bike would getting built up by one of the technicians and I could pick it up in the evening, Perfect I thought. On arrival to the shop the lad wheeled my bike out and it looked just as good as I had hopped. Then, after about 2 seconds of seeing it side on, I spotted a bash about the size of your little finger nail in the side of the bottom tube of the frame where paint had come away down to the carbon frame . I quickly pointed this out to the lad showing me the bike along with further damage and scrapes down the top and bottom tube on closer inspection. When I said I did not want the bike he almost looked surprised before admitting himself that he wouldn’t take the bike if he was in my position. He then went on to say that the damage must have been caused during transit… If that was the case then how did this not get picked up during the bikes assembly in the shop prior to me viewing it? This did knock my confidence in buying a new bike. Why would this not have been picked up earlier by the technician building the bike and was it a case of them knowing and just trying to get rid of the bike onto me hoping I wouldn’t notice? Maybe I am just being too sceptical / cynical over something that was a genuine error and mistake. It would be interesting to see what forum members think of this situation and to see if anyone has had similar experiences? Anyhow, the result is that I am still bikeless awaiting another one being delivered to the shop. Hope it won’t take as long this time and I will be back on two wheels this weekend! Cheers

I was reading the story and thinking " oh aye that'll be halfords" but then read the carbon bit.......it would make me think twice about the shop for the reasons you mention. Never mind the shop I want to hear about the bike Anyways, welcome. I am a fellow Scot but now living in Ireland.

Chopper,
I wasn’t sure if I could name shops on the forum, it was Evans Cycles in Edinburgh. It might also be worth noting that the shop has been very helpful prior to this which is why I was a bit knocked out of place with the experience. It all just seemed like they were trying to pass the bike on to me knowing it was damaged.
It just didn’t add up to me that if someone had only just built the bike up then surely they would notice the damage. When you are paying money for a new bike you do not want any damage / scratches on it. With the carbon frame as well I don’t want any impact damage to the frame as it won’t show dents etc. to see how big of impact it was.
I am going to phone tomorrow and see when the next bike will be in, not keep to wait as long as I did with the first time around.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you've had issues with your bike - takes the shine off getting a mew bike doesn't it. I read a post on FB last week about a lad who ordered a carbon Norco from Evans. First one turned up damaged and second one had half of the decals missing (one side just read NORC). Hope you get it sorted.

Andy,
That’s the problem I’m facing. The shop has been excellent prior to this. I still want the bike though but it would really annoy me if I had to wait another 14 ish days for the bike due to their c**k up.
The bike is a Norco Sight C7.3. Really excited to get it and get out on it. My mate was going to be heading down from Aberdeen this weekend to Edinburgh with his bike which adds more annoyance to the situation as we never get to catch up due to work and we both have this coming weekend free but I am now bikeless!
Chris,
It really does, I haven’t experienced anything like this before. It seems trivial to go on about it but it really has p****d me off..
Nightmare, it’s a carbon Norco that I have ordered as well. I hope this is a one off with me and the next one is spot on.
Thanks for the welcome guys.

Roundie,
Ordered a Norco Sight C7.3. Really looking forward to getting out on it. The process has been tainted as of late though.

Could you get onto Evans to loan you a bike for the weekend, it's their cock up after all, could be worth asking.

Hi and welcome to the site.
I am also from Edinburgh and have had various dealings with Evans Edinburgh, some good and some bad, you've done the right thing in rejecting the bike and yes it should have been picked up by Evans staff during the PDI. There is no excuse for not picking up the damage that you describe and as such they have wasted your time. You should be asking for some for of a discount.

Cheers guys, some decent thoughts here.
I will get on to them tomorrow as I do feel mistreated on this one. Please tell me if I am overreacting though. It’s not the fact that the bike was damaged that’s p*****g me off it’s the fact that someone would of known about the damage but they still tried to pass it on to me. The lad showing me the bike might not have known but surely someone would have known.
If they had just said straight out that the bike has been damaged either in transit or as a result of the bike being put together in the shop then I would be ok and I would understand that they need to order in another one. These things, as annoying as they are, do happen.

howdo danthor. i dont think your over reacting at all.not spotting the damage in the first place or hoping to get away with you not seeing it sounds like poor service to me. i'd find it hard to believe that no-one has spotted it somewhere in the process.

Hello Danthor ...welcome to the forum .. Far from overreacting I think you are under reacting ..I would have blown a gasket! Not for the fact that it was damaged ..but as you have already stated for the fact that they tried to fob you off . I would definitely be looking for some sort of goodwill gesture ..time is money and they have used up a lot of yours .. If you want to venture over the border anytime we are next door neighbours in Northumberland !

Just my tuppence worth on Evans, I like the website and visit it often and iv'e bought stuff from them before, the shops though leave me feeling cold, they give me that feeling i get when i go into Halfrauds, I think us hardcore bikers expect special treatment, not in a spoiled bastard way, but we like individual attention and I just don't get that in Evans, My favourite bike shop in Edinburgh is pedalsbikecare.co.uk/about-us/ , bruntsfield place, near the meadows, Truly excellent and the guys give you exactly what you want, very passionate about what they do, i can't speak highly enough about them

Danthor, if you were paying a fair bit of wedge on a new car would you accept a ding on it......I dont think so (never mind when it comes to re sale). You are not over reacting, just hope you get it sorted so you can get out riding soon. Lovely looking bike BTW, get it over to my old stomping ground at Dumyat.
See you in the forums, they are a helpful bunch on here, no crap just good honest banter.

Glynn that’s exactly it, it is poor service and very poor sales tactics. I would agree that surely somewhere along the line someone in the shop will have noticed the damage and just left it as fit for sale. That’s the bit that’s getting to me. With it being a carbon frame as well am I right in saying that the damage may appear to be light ish damage but it could really be a massive issue depending on the severity of the hit that caused it? Hodgy you are right about the time wasting, driving into Edinburgh on a Sunday was a ball ache never mind doing it all for nothing! Northumberland is not far from me at all, my mate lived in Otterburn for a while before he was moved up North with work so I have spent a bit of time there. I am actually based in East Lothian but I spend a lot of time in Edinburgh. A trip over the border once I’m set up with a bike would be good . Chopper, second that. For gear I think they would be good as they have a good selection and from what I can see its well-priced? However I have been seriously put off of spending big money (well I think its big money) with them on a new bike. I have actually been into pedals bike care in Bruntsfield as I walk past it sometimes on the way to work. They have a nice Banshee on sale at the moment so I might take a trip to the shop on lunch. That’s the point Andy I feel I am paying a fair wedge for a new bike and its put me off actually going through with it and Evans. The car analogy is spot on, the ding might not necessarily affect the physical performance of the machine but I still don’t want it. However that all being said and even as pissed off as I am I really like the bike and its currently on sale with 0% finance and they have another one being delivered …… All in all thanks for the comments guys . I am going to either phone them today or go into the shop to speak to them on my lunch. Hopefully they see the point I am making.

Right ok, with Pedals doing 0% this could be interesting…. I will be taking a walk there for sure at lunch time. If they have something similar to the Norco I might be tempted to pick it up. Cheers for that.

I would have gone ballistic...and asking for a great discount on that bike or the next bike...or some free gear. it's always better to speak with the store manager btw, in case you haven't done. It all depends on the scratch of course...if the discount was worth getting it with the scratch and the warranty still stands...maybe! Don't forget it is a mountain bike and it will get scratched anyway...however this is the reason why I don't buy carbon...if it was aluminium, I'm sure the majority here would say, get the biggest discount possible but it's OK. Because it's carbon, it makes everyone much more nervous! On Evans, at the Sheffield store, I have nothing but great things to say about them.

I have been into this Evans store a few times and they have been brand new all of the time and always had time for questions and a chat about products.
Wheeling a damaged bike out for someone to buy must of just been a mistake due to high work load or something. The store is normally spot on to be fair.
I would go back no doubt.
