I'm taking it Glynns still up for it, so theres at least two of us, yay! Whilst the weather good and trails running nice and firm I would propose the Pen Y Ghent loop clockwise, starting in Clapham to take in a nasty climb and fast field and then bridle way descent towards the the climb up to Pen Y Ghent. 5 or 6 good descents along with equally nasty climbs. I would propose a 9.30/45 meet for 10am prompt departure from the centre of Clapham, Church lane, park up on the right side of the road near St James Church. Its straight up the tunnel climb from there. There is a toilet on the NT car park just back down the lane. here; LA2 8EB www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=374585&y=469345&z=110&sv=374585,469345&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=716&ax=374585&ay=469345&lm=0 Something like this but can be tweaked on the day; ridewithgps.com/routes/14157481

Post by kirky72 on Jun 3, 2016 12:15:49 GMT
Both.......
IIts all doable on a hard tail however theres 4 or 5 miles of choppy broken up rocky lanes so the full suss is going to be comfier.

Aye see you in the morning, shame we couldn't have gone today but never mind, the rains not due there until 2pm ish, well be drenched through with sweat by then anyway and the rain maybe welcome to cool us down. It's going to be a muggy and sticky one.
Ring me if the parkings not obvious when you get there. If you head for the centre and take the right side of the river you'll pass the nt car park on your right, there tends to always be plenty of parking a bit further up on the right and if not then more so just before the church. I posted the postcode and what not earlier on.
Oh and you bring a few coppers there's a unique honesty box cafe halfway round where we can have a brew and cake, it's set up in somebody's barn so you can top up your fluids etc and chuck in what you think.

Just back from this one. Had a great day out in the South Yorkshire dales with Glynn, taking in best bits of Clapham, around the shoulder of pen y Ghent anti clockwise with a added descent down to stainforth and back around, back up to the Crummock dale which over looks pen y Gent to descend back to the cars. Set of nice and sunny and pretty hot and clammy as we did the first Streep climb up from Clapham to drop down a fast field descent and then a nice fast flowing narrow bridleway with odd surprises here and there to wharfe and turned for Helwith bridge to climb up toward pen y Gent. The chosen climb is what's classed as the best descent in the guide book versions of the tour of pen y Ghent. This means it's very steep in places, however it takes you up in half a dozen long step like chunks, steep flat for a little and then steep repeat x 6. We then turned to head down ultimately to Halton gill/foxup, after a big a of a spin down a quiet single lane road we branched off a bridleway down to stainforth. This is when the heavens decided to open and we were drenched through in minutes. Spoiled the descent a bit as there was so much standing water down the ruts it made it a blind run down. We climbed the road back towards Halton and foxup stopping at Kitty's honesty box cafe, a converted barn/out building stocked with cakes, hot drinks, cold cans in the fridge, washing machine, toilet etc etc. so we stuck the kettle on and set about wringing out our sodden clothes to the delight of a group of granny red socks taking shelter across the way. Brew drunk, towelled semi dry, cakes ignored and a quid in the honesty box e were back on our way. Unfortunately back out into a torrential thunder storm. Lightening was striking nearby but we couldn't see it through the fog. Back up into foxup moor after a push up the hill the trail was rideable but not the bone dry pump track that it had been last week. It's a bit up and down from here and a few wet bits to contend with, rivers now flowing where I had never seen them before and large puddles and extra river crosses emerging. After another short carry up what was becoming a river we eventually hit some fast bits of down hill track which is split a few times with an optional bridge crossing or splash through a river. The bridges are basically concrete slabs which require a step up and a drop off. Managed a couple but one came upon me at a bad angle and a bit too fast so wasn't able to adjust to get over it. Then there is a downhill section through bogs and puddles before a faster narrow hard packed trail right down to hull pot ( a big hole in the limestone) a quick look in and then down the fast rocky road to Horton. All in looking at strava the down hill adds up to to around 5 miles however it's made up of a few different sections of varied terrain. I've left my laptop in the office so can't add the photos from my camera just now but Glynn took some pics as well. The cameras only came out when the weather as good so it won't tell the full story of the ride because half of it was more of a tropical storm than a balmy summers day. www.strava.com/activities/602875321Feeling well and truly knackered that humidity sure takes it out of you.

well we survived! didnt get struck by lightening out on the moors tho it looked like a lamb had been.it looked dead and very fresh. i also survived the tunnel of doom about 400 metres from the finish, a pitch black tunnel where you have to guess your line. front wheel washed out and i was down, using my arm as a fall stopper, really glad i was wearing my elbow pads or it could have been a hospital job. thanks john for being the ride guide on a tough 31 miler. oh did john mention we got absolutley soaked through over and over. only a few photos as the camera got put deep into my rucksack to stop it getting too wet. i'll look at them later to see if they're worth posting

Here you are Glyn, stood next to a wide gaping hole. Hull pot Some limestone Just a few miles to go, slightly worn out. We have left the area that totally fogged over in the back ground, that's were we got wet.

Whernside would be a great long descent climb up would be a bitch Inglebrough would be OK but don't do the climb up that the walkers do as you are 3 points contact as you climb up lol Descent of penny y Ghent would be fun as well mate
