Starting at the 5 Lane Ends Thornley Gate on the outskirts of Allendale Town 10.00 for a 10.30 am start.grid ref : NY 83 56.
It's been a while since I have done this ride but it used to be a real favourite...dont know why as the very last climb is a real ball breaker..but it is on tarmac !
It starts by climbing up on the b/way following the course of the old lead mining flues to the chimney at the top of Dryburn Moor...and beyond to the road where we turn right and after a hundred metres turn right again for a great descent across the moor ..which is always a little moist !
Upon reaching the road we turn left( check brakes) to descend very steeply to the road junction at the bottom turning left to pass through Ninebanks.
After 1km turn right to cross the River East Allen and begin climbing initially on the road until it bears elbow left ...where we carry straight on .
The climb up Keirslywell Row used to be one of the most demanding technical climbs in these parts and I have no reason to believe that has changed but it's been a while ...be warned though it seems to never end !
Follow this all the way over to Clarigill Head ( Cumbria ) and turn right onto the A686 for 2.5 km where we leave the road to follow a track over Roundhill which heads mainly down and has a bit of everything ...!
At the end of this crossing we rejoin the A686 turning left and then immediately right which drops and then leads to the really steep hill which we came flying down early in the ride ..this time we go up and it's a toughie...but just about doable!
One final off road descent to get us back to the start ...then a visit into Allendale for refreshments after changing at the cars .
It's a great ride and one which is way overdue a visit ...
I have spoken to Paul and he is up for it ..anyone else?
This should finish me off if I do manage to get to Whinlatter on Thursday!
