Any one been on it? I'm looking for a family friendly route for a day out on Monday. Needs to be reasonably flat, which it is and have good food stops I can see they have a trail at Tissington and High Peak but the Monsal seems to have more written about it so assuming it will be more interesting but possibly busier! cheers

I'll get back to you in a bit jimbo cheers G, I was assuming you would know, no rush as won't make decisions until Sunday and weather forecast but it looks ideal for a day out. If there was somewhere off there that my son and I could do a more exciting hour that would be perfect

the monsal trail and tissington and high peak trails are all very similar in that they are all converted railway lines, mostly flat but theres the odd incline here and there. IMO the high peak and tissington and the section of monsal trail between monsal head and cheedale are more picturesque than the section of monsal trail between monsal head and bakewell. there isnt anything really exciting directly off any of them apart from manners wood between bakewell and chatsworth.the golf course descent is the best bit and it drops you almost directly back onto the monsal trail at the old bakewell station.that also means tho that you would have to climb up on tarmac to the top (approx 1 km) to the start of either manners wood or the golf course descent. i can do you a bit of a map to give you a better idea of where i mean.

Sounds great Glynn. I think we will probably park at Bakewell and head out and back, that way the girls can go into Bakewell and shop if they want and Ben and I can head off. If you can pinpoint a start of the descent I can find my way to it. cheers James

While you are on it Glynn, what's the name of that pub where we stopped for lunch? Need to take the girls there for ice cream and enjoy the awesome view!

gonzalo it was the monsal head hotel jimbo i hope this helps.the first map shows the start of the golf course descent and the start of the manners wood trail, both where it says BALLCROSS FM. the tarmac climb to the start is the yellow switchback road which climbs out of bakewell. the second map shows the manners wood trail which isnt actually a bridleway.it then doubles back to coombs fm then the start/end of the monsal trail. the manners wood trail is nothing super technical but theres some bits that could catch you out (see gonzalos pic of me tangled in the undergrowth from yesterday) jimbo hope this helps. if you need any more help dont be shy

Thanks Glynn really appreciate that. Is the Monsal Head Hotel a good place for food?
