Can someone explain this to me I bought my bike second hand so had to read up on the spec etc, front travel is 160mm (easy to measure) rear travel is said to also be 160mm. However if I measure my stanchion on the rear shock it's obviously miles off 160mm, so how do you get to the figure of 160mm? If I didn't know this, if I wanted to change shock how would I find a correct replacement to fit (not that I need to) Is it all to do with how the linkage/chainstays move rather than the actual travel of the shock?

Yeah its the way the linkage moves not the length of the shock body. For a replacement, you measure the eye to eye length (so where the bolts go) and then the stroke, which is the length of the shock body or stanchion. The measurements are normally printed on the shock somewhere.
