Guys, I currently have 670mm bars and a 65mm stem. Steering is a bit twitchy and climbing the front goes light quite easily if not moved far enough foward.
Now I have some 760mm bars I want to try out.
If my GCSE Physics serves me well them this should slow the steering a bit as more throw (but less effort) will be required as the bar end is further away from the steerer.
Will it help with climbing though?
My thoughts are that wider bars will naturally move my body position further forward due to wider/longer reach.
Is this correct?
Will see how I get on with the wider bars, if I don't like 'em will try a slightly longer stem and see if that helps.

It's all about the stem for me, bar width won't have that much effect on climbing - stem will though. A longer stem naturally chucks you forward over the front, but then you suffer on the downs. I'd experiment with second hand stems till it feels right.

Yes your physics is correct... A moment is the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance to the pivot.. As you know, increasing the length of the bars means the distance is longer, so less force is needed to push the bars.
As you've increased your bar width, i'd compensate with a shorter stem. I now run a 53mm stem which feels great. Long stem and wide bars would mean you would be really stretching whilst cornering. 65mm aint that long though so you may be fine!

Please don't be taken in by the fad... Wide bars, short stem, it's certainly can't be used in every case... Each individual is different, I went for a shorter stem, as I felt far too stretched out on longer rides...

Agree Adam, best to experiment if at all possible - borrow a mates bike or like I said, get a couple of tatty second hand stems to try. I can't ride Jay's bikes as I feel like I'm stretched flat - he hates mine as they are cramped to him.
Diff'rent strokes, innit?
