Are you riding the actual trails? Or just out exploring woods? I'm usually doing the latter, means the stuff doesn't often get ridden so there's never any real boggy stuff!

Just out exploring - unfortunately Cannock holds the water well. Apart from the marked trails., which are just about rideable all year round.

Ah, that sucks :/ Thankfully all the local hills go right on to the River Severn so it all drains beautifully.

Just doesn't appeal. If I am that desperate I've got a gay walker thingy in the garage . I would rather go on that than wear lycra.

Why not do a bit of running to keep fit.
Everyone says they can't do it but if you start gradually you'll ease into it OK. You can sneak a quick run in more easily than an MTB ride and there's less kit to clean.
Or even swallow your pride and get a road bike! It's no more embarrassing than having mudguard on an MTB.
At this time of year I alternate between run/road/MTB. You can't beat a bit of variety. As I said to the wife.

Just had another idea. Exciting indoor training:
Get down to the new Tesco on your bike then get inside and hammer around the isles as fast as you can. It won't be long before you get a security guard or two after you. Outrun them for as long as you can. It'll give them a bit or something to do and you'll have great fun and a good workout.
Wear a go-pro and put your video on here. (Every little helps)

I really want to get out riding as well, not been out in nearly 2 weeks! It's not the motivation that's the issue, it's the time. Working 9am to 8pm at least 6 days a week atm, so I have zero riding time! I've got loads of time, just not feeling it. The cheeky trails are just mud baths and I am bored stiff of the Dog and Monkey. In the middle of 15 off and I am just wasting the time. If you've loads of time, try somewhere different, maybe a change of scenery and a new challenge is what you need

Was talking to my mate at lunchtime and realised I haven't biked for 2 weeks and doesn't look as if I will get out until the 23rd! This is my life too Me three I've not got time to fart never mind go out on the bike lol

Me its 50 mile round trip nearest trail Mabie/Ae forest .
Aggravated old foot injury doing Ae on saturday foot is proper swollen and bruised .not sure if i did it on the last big climb (didn't feel anything) or if it was going in the loft to get Christmas tree and decorations down after i come back from the ride and my foot slipping and stretching on the banister side wall ..didnt feel it until i got out the bath 20 mins after getting out the loft . pretty sure it was the latter .
plantar fasciitis is so painful and wouldnt wish it on anybody . so no riding for me for a while .
I also lack motivation to go out in the wet , but saturday i had to go for a ride as wanted to test my new Nukeprrof knee pads and Royal matrix jacket . both were supurb ..knee pads took half a ride to get used to and then just forgot about they was there , even got in the car with them on without realizing .
Now in new year im on the look out for a cheap LPG van just enough space for 2 bikes . so i can then travel the UK .(Peak district, Cannock , wales ) .really want to do the Ae enduro next august ..and thats my aim . but need to get 2 stone off too .

I think you need to go elsewhere Pez. I got stuck in a rut with Cannock to the point that it bored me to tears as I was going every single week. It's not the only place around here that you can ride, you just have to look. When the weather outside is frightful and the fire is so delightful we go on urban rides. Find some steps to launch yourself down or wall rides in the subways. The area around Wolves Civic Centre is great as you can do wall rides up and around flights of stairs with enough speed. If you don't fancy that get yourself over to Baggeridge park (riding there 21st, welcome to join), lots to do there if you look around, or conquer the Wrekin! Sandwell Valley has a small trail called the miners, but there is a fair bit of off piste there too. Done Stile Cop yet? That can be fun and there is nothing on the red run that's any worse than the monkey. You could chuck the bike on the rack and head down to Hopton or Eastridge too.
Above all, i'd recommend to start riding in groups. Since I joined the cycling club i've never had more motivation and less time!
Can't agree with all the road bike bashing nonsense though, it does wonders for fitness. If it's just the Lycra that bothers folk do you really think being a grown man riding a bicycle, covered head to tow in mud wearing knob head glasses and doing wheelies on the car park looks good? Geeze. I'd never leave the house if I worried about what others thought of me, especially with my beard!

But definitely get further afield like hopton, wrekin, eastridge, long mynd, all within an hour from you. PS Road bikes are cool

Barrfy ...don't really want to open a can of worms about roadies ...but... 99.9% of the time they bring it on themselves by being totally arrogant pricks I don't really mind that they can't be arsed to acknowledge me ..I now go out of my way to be as loud as I possibly can with my greeting whenever I have the misfortune to be on the same stretch of road as them ..and don't buy into the fact that each and every one of them are doing a time trial so can't even raise a finger in acknowledgement ...no it's not that ...it's their attitude off the bike and the open hostility towards mtbers when for example you happen to share the same tearoom ..and I have witnessed this on numerous occasions . I once had this explained to me by a roadie ..who told me that THEY believed that we were " harming " our bikes by riding them through the kind of crap that we do ..kind of explains a lot ( although doesn't excuse) ...when they spend hours shining up individual chain links ..how they then think we are equivalent to pond life Personally ..I think it's hilarious ..and will continue to be as cheerful as possible whenever I encounter this kind of hostility ..because I know deep down I'm really pissing them off * this obviously does not apply to all roadies ...some of them do have human qualities .

I get bored to tears with the knob heads bashing lycra/roadies etc. I road ride 5 days a week, if I didn't I would be shit at the weekends and be nackered after 2 mins, there isn't one decent mountain bike rider that doesn't road ride And again echoing what was said above, most of the bashers seem to be our older members, if you think lycra is gay you should see an old bloke in baggy shorts trying to look hip, that's 100% worse

I just ride my Fritzz* on the roads and paths in the evenings (my lights are shite so not able to go further afield) I really enjoy it to be fair and I take the dog. 20 - 30 mins is usually more than enough to blow the cobwebs away from a shitty working day. Oh and if there was any doubt, the rolling resistance on Minions is ridiculous!! *mainly due to the fact if I was to get another bike it would be a DH and not a road bike - for me it's nothing to do with lycra, people can wear what they want. I actually just don't like the 'look' of road bikes. I'm sure some of them are beautiful but to me they're like anorexic models I just prefer beefy bikes!)

I'm only joking about lycra! it's the boredom of being on a road that I can't handle. Did a little bit when I first started 3 years ago and the boredom crushed me. Andy I used to love running, but after 40 odd years of playing football and 5 knee operations later, I'm afraid that's just beyond me now. Some great thoughts, opinions and advice on here - thanks all. I'm off out up the Dog in a minute! Weather bomb me arse!
