So, i want to get out on some more day long 'epic' rides, 3-4hr at least. Only issue? I only know trail centres really, ideally i would like to venture onto dartmoor and explore, but would like a garmin to lead me as well as get me back to the car.. So i need: GPS tracking GPS guidance Ability to upload routes to the ride that i can follow On screen maps Added bonus, link to Strava (if not i can use my phone) So whats about?

Why don't you just download the free app from View-ranger and then buy a O.S. map for the area ...it will give you a gps location on the map as well as the ability to map your route ...which I never do ..only using it to confirm my location from time to time ( saving battery life ) I think it works with most smartphones ( certainly an I phone ) I think it's excellent ..and it's FREE !

I'd rather not keep my phone on the bars, and the garmin would allow me a quick look down.
I tried the view ranger app, couldn't get my head around it and any maps i did download wouldn't load.. I'll give it another shot though.
Also as was said above, phone battery. My S4 likes to eat the battery on the best of days.

Does this need interweb reception to work though, like Google maps? Or is that where buying stuff comes in?

Sorry mate ...don't mean to sound thick ..but if you mean does it need the internet or wi-fi ...no absolutely not . I've used it in the middle of Kielder forest where there is no phone reception or any other kind of reception ...it just works in exactly the same way as a Garmin ..using only a gps signal

I use a trusty map, Google Maps and the app Viewranger
Went out on a new route yesterday exploring, took a wrong turn somewhere along the line but quickly got back on track after checking the map
