I believe a zee rear mech will match up fine with an xt shifter but has anyone any first hand experience?

Yes no problem. I ran them together up until changing to a medium mech to get the the expander ring changing correctly.

Yes, flawless shifting with it untill I fitted the expander.

Right, i'll not bother fitting a short zee mech seeing as i've got the 42t +xt running smooth, cheers will.

It was the shortness of the Zee that appealed to me - looked nice and tidy and out of the way. The problem I had was slow shifting on a couple of the gears once I added the 40t - rideable but did my nut in. I percevered and spent ages indexing and re-indexing, getting it to work on the stand but when out riding the problem was still there. Even put a longer B screw in and put washers on the crank arms to improve the chain line but no joy. I have read of many people using one without problem.

I run a zee mech with an xt shifter, works fine. Althou I also run a low range road block on the back as its my dh bike. I don't think a zee mech would take a big gear range (like XC riding) as its not what it's designed for

It's not the front ring size that is an issue thou, you need a good range at the back and I don't think a zee would like this. It would probably do it but would be very stretched out in the lowest gear which wouldnt be good for it
