I think Nelly's right. When I shortened the Deores the original olives were a totally squashed mess compared to the new ones I put in.

Yep, I think Nelly is right iI had the same experience with Shimano shortening. Olive is a one time use thing as it gets crushed as its tightened.

I'm not sure what difference it makes if he's shortening the hoses or not.. If the olive has been compressed, it should be replaced by a new one if taken out!?

Dammit young 'uns right for once! my head was hurting then I was confused. I'd replace any olive I must admit, for the cost of a few pence it's better than having a potential leak or air ingress - you'd have to do it all again then if you were unlucky.

AND THEY WORK FINE !! no fluid pissing anywhere ..bled good and very good stopping power and loads better than my orignal XT levers and at hald the weight too.

To be fair, I've not got a clue. I was just saying how I interpreted what Nelly said.
I've never messed with Shimano brakes..

I've never replaced a lever, just thought it'd be safe to change em. If the LBS says don't bother then ignore us. Most people do anyway.

you sure about that, pretty sure you are supposed to use new barbs and olives each time, I did when shortening my zee's and my mate did when shortening his XT's the olive is designed to deform a little when you torque it up but im not cutting and they are both WORKING fine !! the olive goes on the outside of the hose, little brass bit and is crushed between the lever and nut on the hose to prevent leaks. changing lever means you need a new olive as the old one will be deformed to the shape of the old lever and the exact position it was in you should slide a new olive over the hose before you tighten it, for sake of a few pence put new olives in

Could end rather nasty!!
