Think I'm a beaten man Adam. There's being stubborn then there's realising that when enough people are calling you out over something, it's probably for a reason. I'm looking at the On Ones again (steel and carbon) and trying to convince myself it's the right thing to do.

Finally I'll be able to sleep at night, knowing my mates will never see me riding with a bloke on a Merida!..

Zulu exactly how many hardtail frames have you ridden, to be able to rank your Merida frame so highly?...

My Cube, my Merida, Andy's Ragley, Jay's On One Ti, 456 carbon.
I'm a bit intrigued by the steel thing, does it really make that much difference re the harshness? love the light carbon thing but as an old geezer with an increasingly dodgy back, will carbon give me problems more than a steel HT would? The kit on the steel 456 is much better than the kit on the carbon (x9 to x5, guides to avid 3's) so is that telling me that the carbon frame is better or just more 'trendy' right now so more sought after?
Steel is 27.5-good, carbon 26-not so good. I really really can't make my feckin mind up.

But the meridas 26? And if the harshness of the rides gonna effect your back is a HT really the thing you need to be looking at?

But the meridas 26? And if the harshness of the rides gonna effect your back is a HT really the thing you need to be looking at? Yes I know mate, in an ideal world I'd have the HT as a 27.5 and 31.6 seat post, interchangeable parts that way if summat fecks up. I was going to put up with different wheels knowing that I could interchange posts. The steel is 30.9 and the carbon is 31.9, both different wheel sizes. Can't win. A HT is just for occasional blasts of the Dog, so I reckon my back would take that, but Jay has already told me how harsh the carbon feels, so I am wondering HOW much harsher to a steel that can be?

No piss take ...see the " one man and his bike flying in the face of consumerism " thread ! His bike was crap ..but he was still out there ... Just think that if you want to change the colour of your frame ..then you should ..

Thanks Jay, just twist and shout would give me enough of an idea. Yours is much lighter than the stock build and I struggle with your laid out flat cockpit, but it'd give me an idea about this' harsh' carbon thaang. Next time we are out, I'll take you up on it.

Steel is smoother, and less harsh than Carbon, but it's gonna be a lot more harsh than the Rose... Just buy the 45650b and be done!..

I'm coming around to that way of thinking. I'll have a goo on Jays 456 and then decide. Like the kit on the steel 456, but love the look of the carbon. Tricky. Worst thing for me is the daft seat post size on the steel version - so far, as long as it doesn't break my back, I'm going for the carbon just because I could interchange droppers easily. Wheel size isn't an issue - I can't feel much (if any) difference between 27.5 and 26. As for the SRAM kit if I don't get on with it it can be a future upgrade - I know one thing though, glad I've got Deore brakes on the SS as that's the first thing I'll probably swap over onto the HT. If what peeps say about Avid brakes is accurate, anyway.

Deores are fantastic . I'm a shimano boy personally.. Price/reliability wins every time... Still haven't tried the SRAM 1x though... Maybe that would make me a SRAM fan?? And Avid??... Well. Say no more! do you really use you're dropper that often??.. I rarely use it, only for the gnarliest descents... Never used it round anywhere local, such as Cannock, Pines etc... Perhaps the Peaks and Wales...
