I'm going to start my first ever bit of trail building on Sunday. I've no idea what I'm doing, we have scoped the place out and it has potential. No real big elevation so it isn't going to be a big huge bermy line, just little jumps and drop offs and a rooty decent. I've got a spade, and a rake. What else do I need? Can i build and ride or do I need to wait a while for it to bed in first?

Me and my mate are thinking of doing a mini DH run or two on our local common, small berms, kickers and drops etc. He's bought some cones and all we plan on doing is marking the turns like ski gates and riding it on a wet sloppy morning, that should cut the trail in then we will add features after. Rake bigger berms build jumps etc. Get the trail cut in through repeated riding. Council can't do anything about just riding bikes, not sure if your allowed to start digging stuff

I don't think we are allowed to either, i'm hoping we won't get too much hassle and we aren't going to be destroying the place. There are already a few little features that have been built over there.

I got myself really pumped to go build a trail. Got a few tools (spade, rake, this pronged take looking thing, as well as buckets and wheelbarrows)
Was thinking of building up in the woods where all the current trails are. Found a spot on Google maps, when I finally got up there, found it was shit, So I need to go look around further.
I was gunna start off by raking the line, riding it then adding features in later. Thought this time of year would be a good time to start because of the wet ground.
I spent ages looking online at pictures and videos to see what kind of trail I want to build. Messaged a few builders on Pinkbike regarding building and got some detailed responses. Basically I'd try Copy the features you like the most but add your own style to them. I want my trail to be fast and flowy. Few big berms and lots of jumps. Need to concentrate on the gradient, you don't want it too steep and don't want it off camber as the wet weather will ruin it.
My only issue is getting to my spot. It's about 15 miles away, so riding up there with all this stuff is quite hard! Hopefully this time next month I will be passed and driving!
Good luck with your build, get some pics up throughout your build

Thats exactly what you want! we don't have any big hills just steep hillsides that take about 20 seconds to ride down straight. it has to have off camber sections and its going to have to be steep plus its more challenging to ride

You dont want the whole trail to be straight down the hill but you dont want it to be all off camber. Got to get the mix right, otherwise the weather will just ruin it and you'll end up with ruts and shit

Where I'm building is somewhere we already ride anyway, it just has loads of potential to improve it and use it's natural features better by tweaking them. Theres a decent sized and very steep bomb hole that would benefit (me) from having some big drop offs.

Theres a decent sized and very steep bomb hole that would benefit (me) from having some big drop offs. Sounds good! Stumbled across the first trail i ever rode last week. It had been neglected so i hadn't ridden it for ages. Somebodys replaced the wooden features e.t.c and its brilliant. Starts off with a large bomb hole which gains loads of speed and then towards the end, you hit a large jump which lands you inside another before flying out of it straight into a corner

I've built a few now. I try to keep my tracks as tight and technical as I can make them. Good corners really make a track for me. There's average/shit jumps everywhere so why build more? Get it raked out (if it even needs that) and ride it in.

I have done lots of trail building ..all legal and with permission of the landowner ( in this case the forestry commission ) If possible I would advise you to do the same ..or risk prosecution ...just saying ...

Good! Took my new bike with me and did all of 2 miles on it. It wasn't as hard as I had thought and we have made a few little kickers over drop offs and a railway sleeper boardwalk over a downed tree with a drop off on the other side. The surface pure clay and very vet and slimy at the moment, so some of the steep sections are largely unridable. I guess that just means that it has time to bed in though.
