Nice choice Nelly. OP put some links to the actual bike and you will get more people's opinions.
Personally there are all good bikes, have you tried any of them?

Haha... Ok noted... I like the look of the boardman! Looks like it's got good kit. I kinda wrote off halfords and went straight to specialized, Scott, trek etc but looks like I was wrong... Do you think I'd benefit from a 29er? I'm 6ft 2 for the record...

I think the crave is obviously best value for money - though I'm not keen on the mix of SRAM and Shimano gearing (don't know why, just my OCD kicking in)
I'd personally go for the Trek if I was after an out and out XC bike.

For the type of riding you said you were going to do ( mile munching ) a 29er will suit your needs perfectly . Your height really has nothing to do with it ..frame size being the determining factor ..as always though ..go and try a few of these bikes before deciding

No I appreciate the advice... I'm pooping down to halfords today to check the boardman and voodoo out. It's a shame you can't borrow them all for a week to decide;)

For what you intend to do, stick with the HT 29ER. Seriously. The Boardman FS has its place but will be heavy and draggy for you. Unless you fancy hitting trail centres after your XC run in which case the Boardy FS is spot on.

To add my 2 pence worth, think hard before committing to an XC bike, I bought one 2 years ago thinking that was all I wanted to do but ended up buying a full sus 14 months later.
