Hi All,
I am a little bit of a newbie in this .. So my current set up, is as is when i bought the bike - 2013 Kona Cinder Cone with a standard 27 gear shimano Alivio(FR)/SLX(RR) set up ..
RR i'm happy with .. Front, im thinking of having just a single 34 tooth (maybe) Narrow Wide Ring ..
My Question is, with the cranks currently having 3 cogs up front, is there an issue with spacing etc going down to one? IE am i going to need to get a new crank set ??
Thanks ........

You should be ok with the chain line as you replace the middle cog with the narrow wide ring Well that's what I did with both my bikes it Adlai helps if you're rear mech has a clutch on it Going 1x is best thing i did on my bikes

Do it, do it now, go do a 32t front 11/36 rear like i did , it'll be hard goin up those hills but it'll get you fit in the long run, those N'dooro fast blokes run a 36t on the front but us mortals aint gonna compete with that, it's a much simpler set up on the bars too, one lever up n down the gears is all you need

Thanks for the input chaps .. I generally road ride (to work daily) so need the top end really. I very very rarely come of the 42 tooth at the moment and think i should be ok with a 34. Rear Mech doesnt have a clutch.. As from what I can find, I can only get a 10spd shimano clutch rr mech and im on a 9 cog. But, at the point of changing, I think i will look at getting a clutch mech with 10spd ..

A nine speed sram shifter will work a 10 speed shimano rear deraileur. You could go zee rd until you update the cassette if you get chain drop issues.

Its a 9spd rear derailleur with a 9spd cassette ..
But if it will work as is, then i'll look at getting a single cog upfront sooner rather than later!
Anyone know of any good vids/how to's to removing the cranks etc and then re-installing with a single cog?

It's dead easy pal. Even i can do it I did a guide on that *hu-hum* other forum. Probably not there any more. You'll need a BB wrench. Allen key. Chain splitter and you'll need to buy shorter chain ring bolts. I'll see what the tube of you chucks out. Well i have the above mentioned tools !! Will need a set of bolts though .. Will begin looking into it in more detail. Thanks again all.

You'll be fine with a 34t I run 34 with an 11-36 and have had no problems yet! Started challenging myself recently seeing what i can climb up, some sections ridiculously steep!
