Headed over to Castleton this morning for a blast on Fatso, got there for 10am and all was well, set off up the broken road to Mam Tor then hung a left and did the cavedale descent for the first time, WOW! what a descent down the limestone way, starts off over a field, drops into a gully then a rutted path then bam! drops straight down a rocky wet water flooded stone path straight into Castleton village!
After that i climbed back up the broken road up to blue john cavern then cut the road miles out by cutting across the corner and climbing the side of Mam Tor, I then nipped round the back and rode up the side of Mam Tor then the snow came, thick and fast! I then tried to outrun the snow by dropping off the side of Mam Tor down Hollins cross.... I lost!
I carried on and did Bastard climb at Blackley clough up to Hope Cross, then decided as i was p***ed wet and freezing cold cold i'd call it a day so i headed down Hope Brink into Hope then did the last couple of miles on the road back to Castleton.
When i set off home from Castleton i had to drive out of winnats pass towards Chapel only to find the snow had completely covered the roads up there and everyone was struggling to get out. I got up Winnats pass as people were beginning to turn around and head back for Castleton, on the way out there were 2 crashes and a land rover on its side. It took my trusty little Astra 45 minutes to do the 6 mile drive down into Chapel and on to clear roads.
Total ride... 16.4 miles, 2384ft ascent, moving time 2hrs 49mins
Some pics....
Cavedale,
Back of Mam Tor
Little vid of halfway down Mam Tor
Hiding from the snow having a change of gloves/jacket and some choccy
Heading out of Castleton up Winnats pass in the car
3/4's of the way up
All in all, Bloody awesome days riding! shite days driving!
