was going to go 1x10 but decided against it due to fitness. thinking 2x10 instead using a nw chainring as the main and keeping the granny. would i encounter problems shifting down due to the nw not being ramped?

30t narrow/wide is the correct answer.

Why would you want to do that?

go 30t nw with 42t expander.i shit myself when I switched to 1x10 cos I thought I`d be struggling but I`ve been amazed just how well I`ve coped with it (apart from Saturdays ride at llandegla when I ran out of steam within the last 30 minutes but that was cos I`d not had any breakfast )

Why do you even want to do this? You shouldnt ever lose your chain on a properly setup 2x with a clutch mech?
Id go 2x and run a bash ring, thatll reduce any chance of the chain derailing by 50% or more, you can plow through rocks and still enjoy a full range of gears when you need them. People are far too keen to get rid of important parts of their bikes for such marginal gains.

I wouldn't call it marginal gains - I just don't like 2x10. Collects shoite, looks a mess, feels a mess and unless you are in the alps or scotland, you don't need all those gears. That's just my opinion of course.

Wouldn't work, the NW profile is designed to not let the chain slip off. I was worried about it originally, but a 30t up front and a standard 10spd cassette on the rear I can get up all trail centre climbs, local trails in the hills are more work but doable.

Was at hamsterly last Friday , decided to leave it in middle ring and struggled on the climb from the cabin up to the car park ( start of section 13) I mean really struggled it's hard work but doable in granny but didn't even make it 1/4 of the way. Only asked as I have bought the 32 Nw and was just trying to utilise it. Never used the big ring. I kinda knew the answer already lol

I went 1x10 and went for 32T up front and then put a 42T on the rear.
So far so good. Manage to climb around Hamsterley ok and I'm not the fittest person either.
Been advised to re jig the rear mech for better changing of gears. something to do with on-one cage and something else.

Did read online that some enduro riders had been running a 1x10 set up with just a rear shifter and rear mech and narrow wide chainring, but they left the granny ring on the cranks. Come a big climb, they'd get off and manually put the chain onto the granny, before putting it back on the N/W at the top.
Now i think that would work, and it may be helpful, but i honestly think, just go for 1x10! I done it and i dont regret it at all. Works a treat, im running a 34t with an 11-36 and haven't had to get off and push yet. In a granny, you're basically riding at walking speed so its easier and faster to get off and push! With the 1x10, you just work with it and you will be able to climb shit you never thought you would. Fitness will improve massively too! Cant say ive missed my 3x9 set up one bit

2X and bash all the way , stops the circular saw making holes in your leg when you crash !, I'm old fashioned and run 2X9 on both bikes , never found it necessary to go 10

I hated the Chief being 2x10, just hated the clutter and my brain couldn't cope with having to choose which front ring to be in.
I won't ever have more than 10 again. One of the big draws of the Zero I'm getting is that a 1x10 and tubeless set up is a standard free option on the bike - the 2 things I would have done before riding it anyway, so saves me a lot of faffage and extra expense.
