Strange website! can't see how you design a t shirt there, did you just email em and take it from there? Yeah it was all done via e-mail. I told him what I wanted and he sent drafts. I just asked him to change this and that until they were how I wanted them. Sounds a long process but it was all done in less than an hour.

I thought it might impress the downhilliards. Whatever it's made of, I'll wear it on my bike.. Haha

Anywho, back on track.
I've ridden the bike a bit now and love it. The drag on the cranks has gone, the brakes are superb and the suspension is amazing.
I'm still working on minimizing cable rub which has already made it's mark on the forks and headset. It just needs one or two pieces of tape and a cable tie and it'll be good!
Drivetrain.. I was a bit worried about spending close to £1000 on stuff I'd never used, I'd never used 11spd or SRAM before. When the stuff arrived, I was impressed by the quality of it all but for the cost, should have expected top quality. Fitting it all was plain sailing, just the same as fitting 10 speed stuff. The hardest part was getting the cable routed through the rear mech. It goes through pulleys, holes, clamps the lot. Setting the gears up (indexing) was a bit of a headache. I didn't realise you had to be so precise. Just the smallest turn of the barrel adjuster has an effect on how gears change. Performance wise, WOW. The gear changes are so fast and smooth it's hard to get your head around it. Changing down is by far the smoothest and quietest gear changes I've seen/heard. To begin with, I had to look down at the cassette to make sure it had changed. Changing up is also impressive although not so quiet. Going from mid cassette to 42 is a big jump but it does it with no complaint. The shifter is also an impressive bit of kit (to me). It can be moved forwards and backwards on the clamp but you can also move the up lever independently up and down by loosening a t25 pin. The whole system works amazingly well and I'm glad I took the plunge and bought it all. On the 42t sprocket.. I'm almost certain I could climb walls with that thing! I'm running a 34t front ring at the moment which is ok for now! I may get a 36t for around Cannock and swap to the 34t for away days in Wales etc. I do have one complaint about the cranks. SRAM have put some protective tap on them but in completely the wrong place. The part that suffers from foot rub is bare, the rest of the crank is what they've covered....
The brakes.. Superb! Fitted, aligned and not touched them since. They really are amazing brakes that, in my opinion, are better than Hope's. I've used Hope brakes for years and thought they were about as good as you could get.. They were but, Guides have overtaken them in my opinion! Long term, I can't comment but bleeding is a simple process. I'm actually thinking of getting rid of the X2's on my 456 and getting more Guides.
Wheels/tyres.. The wheels are good, the rear hub is becoming more noisey the more it 'settles' (apparently it's normal for CK stuff to need time to settle) and the angry bee sound is a refreshing change from the Hope noise. Both front and rear hubs need some adjustment as there is slight lateral play. I was told this would be the case! I'm happy enough with the tyres, the Magic Mary on the front is brilliant, the Hans Damph on the back is ok but has slid out a few times.
Suspension.. The forks feel absolutely brilliant. It's hard to explain why, you'll just have to take my word for it! I think I've got my base setting sorted but I'm still playing with all the settings so they may change. When they rebound from being compressed, they make an amazing noise which I want as my phone's ringtone! The shock has been great too. Again, I'm still playing with the settings but I do have my base settings sorted (for now). The only bad thing about the shock is the stupid rubber ring around the shaft. It marks the shaft and I'm thinking I might cut the thing off once set up.
Ride.. The thing flys down hills. You just point and go, it almost rides itself! Very confidence inspiring, maybe a bit too much at times. I've not done a great deal of jumping on it yet apart from general red route trail jumps. Even on them I feel it gets higher than anything else I've ridden, suspension or frame? I'm not sure but I like it. I can't wait to start doing some proper jumps but I'll wait until I've got a full face lid before trying. Going up hills is surprisingly easy. With 160mm of rear travel and 170mm on the front, I expected to struggle but I haven't.

Looks like Guides are the way forward then - about time a huge company like Avid/sram got their shoite together on the brakes front, has taken much too long, but good they must be if you rate them more than Hopes!
Nice review, young 'un.

Nice review, young 'un. I honestly do, mate. It'll be interesting to see how they do longterm. I agree it's about time they got themselves sorted.

You've always raved about Hopes and I aspired to them (even though they cost the earth) but now I'll look to try Guides at some point in the future - probably on the Chief if/when the Formula's give up the ghost.

Jump on my Mega for our next ride mate, I'll take the Cheif. See what you think! The most impressive thing about Guides is the price compared to Hopes.. I would highly recommend to anybody thinking about buying Guides, get the RSC model for maximum adjustment. You can literally have them feel exactly how you want them to feel. You tend to have very little travel in your levers If I remember correctly? With the Hopes on my 456, It would be hard or impossible to get that feel with their PDC but it wouldn't be a problem with the Guides.

Yer on!!!!
Yes, I do rate the Formulas but they do bite fast (I think I can adjust that, just have never bothered!) they are the only 'good' brake I've had though so have nowt to compare to.

that's a good review there jay, nice to hear after spending ££££ that you`ve got the result you were hoping for. on the subject of brakes I`ve got the hope tech m4`s on the bandit but to be honest I thought the zee`s I had on the ragley were just as good and I definitely preferred the short levers on the zee. hopes look more boss though, specially if you`re a tart like me

Cracking review mate, lovely looking bike too :-) With regards the Hans Dampf sliding out on the rear its a characteristic of the frame I'm afraid they are known to be a little loose on the back but massive amounts of grip on the front. I have never felt my front end go loose yet but the rear is often a bit lively you just get use to it quick enough and it feels normal after a bit !!
I am waiting for XTR 1x11 to trickle down to XT then I will probably go 11-42t !!

From a place in Sweden or Norway or Germany or god knows where they are but here's a linkI contacted him about graphics, bloody hell it was hard work, weeks later and after lack of replies gave up on him. Be interesting to see a before and after with the decals. Do you need to have custom ones not have "slik" on them that i keep seeing?? I'm not sure! Who did you have trouble with? SLIK or the guy from the place the link take you? I had some rim decals from SLIK and they didn't have SLIK on them!

I had no trouble with him. Was very helpful to be fair!
Went from initial ideas through to finished products within a hour!
Bear in mind I've not received them yet!

Well Jay was true to his word and let me have a goo of the Mega on the first section of the Dog today. What a build that is - smooth as feck and feels as light as a carbon, absolutely awesome machine. I hope he didn't notice me clip his MAHOOOSIVE bars on that tight tree bit though What a bike. Looks like a bruiser, rides like a featherweight.
