Starting in Alwinton..it climbs for what seems like ages on rocky , then grassy terrain before giving a terrific drop to the Usway Burn ..a climb over Middle Hill before another grassy fast drop to the edge of the forest and a short stiff climb before what is usually a wet muddy, rooty slither down to Fairhaugh ( I nearly always come to grief ) ..then what used to be one of the most picturesque sections of singletrack where the edge of the forest follows the Usway Burn ...contractors had started to relieve this section of its trees the last time I was there ..which left me ( and Colin) as devastated as the ground on which they stood ..(surely some things are worth more than money)...no doubt this destruction will now be complete... The last section of the ride is a little naughty ...and exploratory ..so won't advertise it here ! Having said all this the forecast is set for wind ...depending on how strong that wind is ..this may not go ahead at all as it is pretty exposed ! If it does a 10.00am start in Alwinton ...with the added advantage of having the Rose & Thistle to retire to at the end ....

Postponed ..due to the fact that the weather will be horrendous ..and the route too exposed . I have had to rearrange plans to see my daughter who is 24 on Sunday ..and as she will be too wrecked from partying on Saturday night ..I'm seeing her for lunch on Saturday instead ( bloody wild child !) . Plan b for those still going was going to be Newcastleton ..but that also is forecast for rain and wind in excess of 40mph ..so there has also been a plan c put forward for Hamsterley ..which is forecast for light cloud and winds around 24mph ...this could well turn out to be favourite... Have fun wherever you end up !

We went to Hamsterley despite the 50mph winds, most of it was fairly sheltered though. We all enjoyed it and found some more new trail just after the big dipper new section, its only ten yards further down on right, rooty and techy but fun. Just the four of us, I was fairly tired right from the start and walked the last bit up to section 13 which I've not done for a long time. Graham was suffering a little from over indulging last night and as usual Paul showed us a clean pair of heels closely followed by Jean.

Yeah, the slightly less than fantastic four still got a good few grinfests in down the rad... but I sufferd quite horribly on the gnarry climb next to the wall, and I chickened out at the top of the biggest dipper in whatever that new twisty bit is called. The wind was unpleasant but not much of a problem but it was very dull and mizzzled on quite a bit and clouded up my specs as always. That's my excuse, nothing to do with the hangover guv'. Still, it's just about beer o'clock again, so... as I'm still an old man who should know better... Cheers!

I didn't know you enjoyed a drink Graham ..! ....hahaha How could you " chicken out" on that new bit ? I was up and over that before I knew it was there ...good fun ! I could have been there after all ..as for the second week running my daughter couldn't spare an hour to see me for a birthday lunch ... The joys of parenthood eh !

Going stir crazy ..need to get out for at least a couple of hours ..so going up to Falstone this afternoon to re-visit some of the trails I used to ride when I lived there ..away from the beaten track but so close to the Lakeside Way ..the Kielder Water Super Highway..( scenic but boring) ..that still most people don't know they exist ...
