Think I could just make out the trail from down on the fire road but cant imagine its going to be left unscathed or repaired if not.

Think I could just make out the trail from down on the fire road but cant imagine its going to be left unscathed or repaired if not. Everytime the FC fell trees near the trails, they ruin them! Once the FC have left the area, the trails usually stay closed for months whilst they get repaired. If the FC agree to pay to have the damage repaired (which they don't always do), chances are, contractors will be brought in. That would mean the section opening sooner but it will have a 'generic' feel to it like other parts that contractors have done. If the FC won't pay, Chase Trails will repair it but as they are all volunteers who build just once or twice a week, it will take a long time to open. That's not even taking into consideration the cost of the repairs. I think around 90% of materials Chase Trails use is donated by local firms! Money has to be found for the other 10%!

The money from an FC car park is not used to repair trails ..this is a common misconception . The average life of any trail is seven years as told to us by our regional recreation and tourism officer ..and after that period it is purely discretionary as to wether it is kept open. Having been a trail builder and commitee member for Kielder Trail Reavers ..I can't stress enough how important and welcome any help given as a volunteer is ..and why you should get involved ..even if it is only on a one off basis ...otherwise what right do you have to complain ? I would still be active now ..were it not for a difference of opinion with a fellow commitee member ..and may still return one day . It's very rewarding to know that you have " put something back " ..and contrary to popular belief you don't have to have a beard either ....

I'll volunteer when/if they start work on the Lower Cliff as It's my favourite trail there and I ride it fairly regularly!
I've already decided to TRY to gather a few locals off here to come along too who ride the trails more often than I do!
The only slight problem I see is that Chase Trails only meet for building/maintenance on Sundays and occasionally Wednesdays.
As for car-park fees.. There are notices up in the car park saying that Chase Trails gets a portion of the fee!?

Well that's great if that happens ..and maybe things are different region by region ..I'm not really knocking the FC here ..as without them and their support mountain biking in this country would be a lot worse off ..I'm just telling what was told to us ..and there reasoning is purely H &S related ..which they are absolute sticklers for . Good on ya Jay for getting involved ..you might find you like it ..then from that who knows you could even get to build features that YOU want to see ...

Seems a bit weird that they are so concerned about H&S in an inherently dangerous sport. Obviously I don't know about parking fees, I can just go off what the notices say. Chase Trails also built and maintain Stile Cop, the DH trails on the Chase. With Stile Cop, they run a system where people who volunteer do get a say on what features are built. It doesn't mean that if I go building for an hour on the hill they'll build a gap jump for me.. You have to show a bit of dedication to building and eventually, your feature may get built. It seems a good system to work too. There are obviously restrictions set by the FC but at least you may get a jump or a berm etc built because it's what YOU wanted.. I don't think the same system is used on the XC trails. The restrictions set by the FC are absolutely ridiculous for the XC trails. Apparently because they are more accessible to more people (than Stile Cop) they have to bear that in mind with what is built. I was told a lot of stuff by a trail builder not long ago when I pulled up and helped them shift a load of rocks for half hour. They even gave me a brew from their Thermos..

As for car-park fees.. There are notices up in the car park saying that Chase Trails gets a portion of the fee!? Yep, believe this is true and they mention it. I'd of gone loads of Sundays last year, but i was told i couldn't take my dog. (Yet i've seen pics of other dogs there). So i'd have to put him in Kennels, on a Sunday for £10 etc. I'm more sorted this year, so will deffo go and help once High Voltage and Cliffs are ready. Best sections on the Chase. Hate to see them tarmac'd like the other new sections.Couldn't agree more..
