went out on a night tonite (Wednesday). we were just about back at the cars coming onto the road from a track, all of us with our super bright lights when a driver of a car pulled up and said 'mind if I have a quick word?'.......'no of course not' I replied. he went on to explain how, when he's coming towards a group of riders like ourselves he's basically blinded by all of our lights coming the other way and it could cause an accident. he wasn't being stroppy or owt, he was very polite but wanted to put his point across to us, he explained that he is a cyclist himself and understands the importance of being seen but as a driver it is very distracting to say the least. we carried on our ways and I thought afterwards that he'd got a very good point. what im saying is that it would be a good thing to put out to the cycling fraternity to remember that we should set our lights to the lowest setting and better still tilt the lights downwards when we are riding on the road. its dead easy to forget just how bright cycling lights are nowadays to drivers coming the other way...............just thought it was worth a mention.

I agree, when I am out with my mates on the country lanes some cars actually stop and pull in thinking we are either horse riders or some massive bit of farm machinery. It's obvious that the lights can be blinding. Once I feel they've seen me I often cover the light slightly with my fingers.

Yep fair point ...however if it gets the drivers to slow down as they pass then job done as this makes a welcome change ..and I haven't encountered anyone who looked remotely irate..dipping the lights does sound like a common courtesy though ..as long as you don't fall off trying to do it ...

I have a cheap flashing small led thingy on the bars that I have on all the time , when on road bits I tend to turn the main twin led one off (also saves the battery ) and tilt the one on my helmet down to point at front wheel , still highly visible but doesn't burn the drivers retina's out .
