I usually ride for around 30 miles a go. A mix of singletrack and fireroads that get me to the singletrack. Usually some pretty good climbs included too.
I never eat before riding, I'm a morning rider and just can't stomach food in the morning.
My question is, is riding on an empty stomach doing me harm?
Is my belly eating.... my belly?

I`ve never been much of a morning eater.i`d rather eat pasta the night before and then just carry some home made flap jack on the ride and a bag of jelly babies for when I need an emergency sugar rush I don`t know if there`s any scientific reason for me doing this but I figured if it`s good enough for the folks running the London marathon,it`s good enough for me.

I'm sure i read somewhere that cardio on an empty stomach burns stored energy, rather than the stuff in your gut so is better for weight loss.

Went out one morning without food and felt really dodgey after about 15 miles. Sat down had a good drink of water and a 9 bar and 10 mins later I was fine. I never go out on a empty stomach now.

I have toast and jam otherwise I energy 'bonk' really fast. Not sure about the exercising on an empty stomach burns more fat though - I read somewhere it's the opposite and your body goes into 'starvation mode' and begins burning muscle rather than fat as a self defence thing. Who knows - I might have dreamt that

I'll try eating before riding then I think.. I used to go to McDonalds when riding but I didn't want to leave my bike outside and I got some right funny looks riding through the Drive-Thru..
What's a good breakfast to ride on then? Bear in mind, I'm really not a morning eater.

I didn't eat before a ride last week and nearly passed out, I'm not a big eater in the morning but I force down a big bowl of porridge at least quickly followed by a rush to the lavvy lol and take a couple of flapjacks for a wee boost (not to the lavvy) lol

Usually out on afternoon rides myself, so I've often eaten prior. If I'm out early for a day of riding (BPW for instance) i'll pop into work and grab some toast and then a couple of paninis for the drive up.
Having ridden when hungry has only ever made me feel really fatigued very quickly!

I'm sure I read it somewhere about the empty stomach thing (could have been on the internet and we all know how accurate that can be!) but I should have said I never EVER ride empty. I eat crap loads for breakfast, porridge, a couple of rounds of toast and some biccys with my cuppa and just take a flapjack out with me on the ride ready to whip out when i feel i need it!

I always have something before riding... My weekend rides are usually morning starts, with the occasional very early start. Even then, i still want to have breakfast. Some Weetabix, coated in sugar, some juice and a banana gives me the energy to set off.
Once out, i usually have some kind of snack. A trail bar (oat and raisins e.t.c), A banana, Mars Bar, Sweets and Flap Jacks are all examples of what i take... Not been fond of the energy gels and that, however i have ordered a High Five Race Pack for my event next week. I will see how well they go!
Surely riding with nothing in your stomach means you bonk pretty early on!

I can't eat too early either so start of with coffee and then top up with mars bars and then try and find a cafe letter in the day.

with my job were often doing physical activity in the mornings. some people can do it on empty stomach but i cant.
I normally have a decent size bowl of high fibre ceral. Like shreddies or weetabix. there good at slow release energy. Porridge is really good to.
I try to be awake for about 25 mins before eating though. Give your body time to wake up before cramming food in

Plan a bacon butty stop into your rides and a pub at the end. Stop for regular fags, basically thats all your nutritional needs sorted right there!!!
(you don't need to plan fag stops, just have one while waiting for your dad to catch up!!)
Seriously though, I always try and get something eaten before a ride. Even if its just a couple of slices of toast and marmite and a lump of fruit as I leave the door. Nothing worse than your legs giving up before your head wants to.

Ont thing to remember is that if you have not got an energy source in your body before exercise the body reaches for the easiest source of fuel . This is Muscle so all you will do is loose muscle .
Even in my case and a lot of you know I have lost quite a lot of weight over the last 12 months if I do not have the correct type of food all I will do is eat muscle to fuel my body . So having some low GI carbs would be a good idea at least 1 hour before riding and after riding for recovery you should have some quick relise carbs ( jelly baby's are good ) to help your body recover .
Also don't forget the Fats we fuel our body from good Fats so we need then bit good fats Nuts are good plain though not salted .
This is why I always have my home made flapjacks that are calculated with nuts seeds Oates and oils they work great

For brekkie ...Sun Pat peanut butter ( crunchy ) & Marmite on toast... or sub the marmite for jam ...whatever mood takes you! Not disciplined enough ( or can't be arsed ) to make porridge although as previously said its a great slow energy release. I also use torq energy gels while out and if the ride is a biggie take a Sarnie or two , flapjack , jelly babies , etc. I also use nuun tabs in my drink bladder to ward off cramp. I'm a bit of a bad lad really as I am also type 2 diabetic ( diet controlled )....but have a bit of a sweet tooth.. Still everything in moderation... My problem is that I don't really look overweight 6'...14.7 st... So I keep telling myself that I'm not !!
