Hey all,
Do I need them and if so is it the more I spend the better?
Where is good to get them?
Feel a little awkward at mtb shops as they are often too personable for me, I like to self select sometimes

Only you can answer if you need them or not. But surely the vast majority of riders wearing them should help answer it.
Think of it this way, it's all about damage limitation, you crash, you're going to get hurt, end of. What pads do is help reduce the risk of serious injury to the areas they cover. Reckon you can still walk with a smashed knee cap?

I've never worn them ..and guess I have been lucky not to have done anything too serious to elbows and knees ..plenty of scars to both ..but that's about all . What's the best of what's out there at the moment...?

After asking around the Cannock Chapter guys on here I got the Troy Lee knee and elbow pads from CRC. You hardly know you are wearing them.
Whether you need them or not is the $64k question. One good crash without them and you might wish you'd got them.
I'm 60 and ride in Derbyshire so I'm doing what I can to tilt the odds in my favour. ETA> before anyone else says it I'm also a crap bike handler!

The troy elbow pads are great nice slim fit etc. knee pads for me I have some Fox Launch the older chunky ones saved me a few times still scrub up like new.
Padding gives you a little more confidence I find. Before I had elbow/forearm pads I hated a tightish twisty singletrack because how close you had to have your arms to it. Now I know if I hit I'll know ive dont it but nothing more. Plus I dont give a shit about Gorse bush now.

I always wear knee pads, helmet and gloves, sometimes elbow depends where I'm riding but saying that you could fall off anywhere and get injured. I'm self employed so no work, no money so for me its important. Question is what are the important bits of your body worth to you ?
As for pads I have Fox launch pro knee pads, nice and comfy IMO and got some second hand Dainese elbow off Ebay.

I got a pair a few months ago in the CRC sale. Just basic set but they do the job.
Feel abit odd wearing them on my short travel XC bike, but I only put them on when I'm at the trails and plan on doing jumps/ riding a new section
It depends on what you're riding. If it's flowing single track with not too many rocks then I wouldn't bother, but if you're doing big jumps, drops and its rooty and rocky as fuck, then yeah I would. All personal preference really
You'll want them though if you do twat yer knee on something

I always wear knee/shin pads and nearly always wear elbow pads.theres been quite a few occasions when iv had a bit of an off and bashed a knee or elbow on a rock or summat that could have caused a bit of damage.its a personal thing and it depends on the type of trails you ride. but they need to feel comfy or you wont wear em. I don't think its a daft question rob when you could potentially be forking out 100 quid on something that you're not sure about.

I'd suggest some light weight knee pads at least. I've got some O'Neill ones, they're soft until you smack them against something at which point they go harder to take the impact, got them for about £40.

So I went to exeter on the weekend and tried the trail there with a couple of mates. Only person who came off was the one with the elbow pads.
I'd probably feel more comfortable wearing some extra protection after seeing the off in front of me.

I love my TLD shock doctors, knee and elbow - gives a bit of confidence especially if you are riding out of your comfort zone.
Can be had for a decent price on fleabay.

I've got on well with Dainese Trail Skins. I actually bought them with my own money and everything! Lightest and least restrictive knee pad with some side protection I could find.
I only ride without pads for easy XC rides/intervals or on the roadie. Padded up the rest of the time.

Another vote for race face knee pads - although mine are the women specific! Wear them all time on our lake district trails and when racing DH.
Currently in process of swapping out body armour for the DH from the 661 elbows, shoulders and spine jobby to just the an evoc air lite sleeveless vest and optional race face elbow pads for races where it's compulsory for women to wear them! I'm good at crashing and taking risks but I like to get up and walk away from them! Also got sick of the 661 being too bulky. Best bet is to go try some on.
