Another vote for race face knee pads - although mine are the women specific! Wear them all time on our lake district trails and when racing DH. Currently in process of swapping out body armour for the DH from the 661 elbows, shoulders and spine jobby to just the an evoc air lite sleeveless vest and optional race face elbow pads for races where it's compulsory for women to wear them! I'm good at crashing and taking risks but I like to get up and walk away from them! Also got sick of the 661 being too bulky. Best bet is to go try some on. What model are they? Looking at Ambush and Indy for the OH. Didn't realise there were ladies specific ones. Are they more DH type?? It's the khyber model, about £40. I've got two pairs and love them for all trail riding and DH. Mega plus is that they aren't pull ons. So can just velcro above and bell knee and then behind knee joint. I've never had pads that don't need pulled on over feet - would never go back!

Errr think i'm on my own here but I've never wore any pads elbows, knees anything. I find them uncomfortable and restrictive. Maybe i just haven't found the right ones, but i've give up trying.

Not on your own Kalli .. Never even tried a pair of either on ..they weren't invented when I started riding .. I know I probably should ..which is why I have been following this thread ...and I have shred multiple layers of skin over the years ..and ain't getting any younger..but it's just the thought of them ..they would probably stop my circulation ..lol

Came off yesterday on a kind of rocky decent. Smashed my elbow into some rocks, came away with a few cuts. I kinda feel elbow pads are more restricting than useful (never worn them mind). Sticking with my knee pads though!

I guess it does depend on your terrain. It's a rare sight to see somebody out in the Lake District without knee pads.
I just wear elbow pads for racing DH because higher risk of crashing. Also scottish DH rules mean women and u18s must have to have spinal and elbow protection or they aren't allowed to race.

If in doubt just wear them, below is a photo of my knee after a brilliant day in the Pentland hills just by Edinburgh , one of the best days ever on a bike until this happened, my one and only time ever without knee pads on, i left them in my bag in the car...only the Pentlands i thought , nothing scary here , it took 2 other people to take me to hospital cos i couldn't drive and approx 2 weeks off work and months before it was working properly again, not to mention all the time off the bike and total grief from my wife cos i wasn't earning....if this photo is a little gory for you then good ...it might just make up your mind for you...i make no apologies eventually it was all good again after multiple doses of antibiotics, there was so much dirt in it the nurse couldn't get it all out so it got infected, nice scars but not a good time

Also scottish DH rules mean women and u18s must have to have spinal and elbow protection or they aren't allowed to race. Anyone else think that's a bit off? I can understand them doing it for Under 18s, but not women as well. Women have as much of a right to make decisions about the level of protection they wear as men do. Stupid rule.

It was quite funny actually, it was a winter ride and I was wearing thermal compression thingies under the shorts must have been going too mad and lost the front end on stegosaurus near start of the Dog - I went flying over the rock 'teeth' that line the run and landed the other side, just thought 'ouch' clipped me knee on the way over there'. Got up, finished the ride went home - it was when I pulled the one leg of the thermals down and a spurt of blood went across the kitchen floor that I realised something was amiss, turns out the thermal things had been holding everything together A week off work and a bomb load of stitches and antibiotics later means I don't go anywhere without those knee pads.

Hey all, Do I need them and if so is it the more I spend the better? Where is good to get them? Feel a little awkward at mtb shops as they are often too personable for me, I like to self select sometimes Don't feel intimidated Rob, they are just there to help and 9 times out of 10 are cyclists themselves and can offer really good advice. Just go in with a clear idea of budget and be ready to explain to them exactly what you are after, the more info the better. IE if you do mainly XC they will likely suggest G-form pads (a great lightweight and minimalist pad for the summer XC rides) or if more traily then summat like my TLD shock doctors. You could even be really cheeky and try some on then go home and get em cheaper on line

I agree, but it's because we were a mixed age category with junior girls in. So it was easier for them to have the blanket rule for all women. Although because of entries on the rise, they split us after round 1 and kept it that way but not updated the rule as far as I am aware.

Blimey mate that's horrific. Yea, it wasn't great but a few scars later and I'm ok. Some might ask why I have asked about wearing pads after such injuries, but I've never worn them on a push bike, after seeing the injuries from other members I'll get some.

I'm in the wear them camp, had I not of had them on at fort William last year I would have been looking at 2 broken knees, even with them on I was struggling after the impact with a number of rocks

Now wearing Dainese trail skins ...have had them on for the last month or so and would concur with Pete's earlier recommendation that they are lightweight and comfortable ..to the extent that you don't really know they are there . Came in useful on my OTB in the grounds of Brodick Castle on Arran last weekend ..did nowt for my neck, shoulders & wrists though ....haha !
