I love a map ..I can spend hours poring over them looking for new or different routes ..but never change them unless I have to due to tattiness The reason that I'm asking this question is that the route we have just done on Saturday ..included tracks that are not on my O.S map ..and must have been on the ground for decades ..and I probably wouldn't have stumbled across them were it not for my View Ranger app / O.S.map on my phone ...which being fairly up to date did show them ..and helped to put a different ( and excellent) twist on an old and familiar route ! How often do O.S.maps get revised ...anyone know ?

I tend not to take my maps with me when i go out, what i do is plot a basic idea of a route then photocopy the part of the map i need on my daughters printer/scanner/thingymebob then put the copy and some directions in a plastic sleeve, seal it with tape and fold it up in my pocket, that way my map stays clean at home and while i'm on the trail i have a waterproof pocket sized route map.

Good idea ..but what I was wondering is how often do OS update the paper version of their maps ..is there a set time ..? It would appear that not having upgraded for a while I have missed out on ( albeit a cheeky track) riding something that I could have been on for years ...

Good question actually... www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/blog/2011/07/how-often-do-we-update-our-paper-maps/Depends on how many they have sold in that area, and how big the change is... If its one new path and its not very popular, then i doubt it will be soon, however it does say they update their online maps every 6 months normally... Worth a read. I have an OS map of the island, its ripped and mucky, but its still usable, and its out with me on every ride! I did use Viewranger, but havent bothered downloading it on my new phone yet... I remember when OS came to map my new school. It had just been finished being built. They came with this long GPS stick, and basically walked around the perimeter of the grounds, the main building, and any other features. Was quite interesting.

Good little read ..thanks for posting that . The thing that puzzled me and why I originally put up the thread ..is that these naughty tracks have only appeared on maps fairly recently ..but it is obvious that they have been there for ages ...just shows that you never know what is around the corner ..
