Headed out around Darwen Tower area yesterday morning. I tried to head over to Rivington from Abbey Village via Great Hill however the trail was very difficult to follow and at a cross roads on the moor I just couldn't find the right route due to really poor visibility with bad fog. I got fed up with dithering around and headed back towards the tower to try and get a few loops up and down to improve my climbing legs.
Good fun at times on the descents but generally there were far too many walkers around, I've never seen so many dogs being walked in one area before, some old geezer had around a dozen red setters running all over the place. To be fair he tried to control them but was fighting a losing battle why some people have so many dogs Ill never know. then there were large groups of family dressed up like they had just come from Church who feel the need to walk 8 a breast width wise covering every bit of track and only move begrudgingly. Is there some reason everybody decided to go walking on Easter Monday?
Any way up above and away from the fog it was a different world weather wise. Fog over Abbey Village and the old Gunner bike on the fence shot.

Rivington/Darwen are always packed on Easter weekend, good Friday being the worst day. Fairplay to you for going up there though

I wanted to go over great hill from abbey village but the route I had planned out didn't seem to work out on the morning, I ended up on anglezarke moor and in the end near the white coppice but all routes were signed as footpaths and no biking signs everywhere, I got a glower from the country warden as I dropped down from there so felt it best not to stop and ask him for directions.

My take on footpaths ..if you can prove that you have regularly used them over a twenty year period then you can apply to have the status changed ( bridleway ) ... Now s'cuse my French Mr warden / landowner / whoever else ...how the hell are you supposed to do that if you haven't ridden on them in the first place ! Short of England getting the same access laws that Scotland have ..get out there and ride a footpath ...

Just ignore the footpath signs around there, they are only there to give the redsocks something to moan about, just tell them in the nicest way to f**k right off, and point them to the bottom of smithills and the stone with the writing on explaining how a hundred years ago ramblers weren't allowed up there until they did a mass trespass to force lord leverhulme into giving them access. Then tell them it's now our turn.

I would have done Mike and I'm keen to get some night rides in however I'm off to glentress early Thursday morning with a supplier meeting before hand earlier in Hawick so need to get an early night which I never manage after some night tine exertion. Also I want my legs yo be fresh ready for the long climb up to the top of Glentress.
I hope your coughs a lot better. Heading out ears on Sunday if you fancy it, let me know nearer the time.

If I can drop the kids at my parents I might be able to have a couple of hours around lee and cragg quarries on Saturday if you can make it.
Then I think I'll head for gisburn or hebden bridge on Sunday morning.
good luck with the course, hopefully it should be well worth while, let me know how you get on.

In one go, or is that all over the ride? It's enough to warrant resting my legs up before hand for one day.

Planning on a quick blast round Gisburn on Saturday morning and doing a longer ride on Sunday Yeh sure, let me know what time you are heading for gisburn and I'll try for that however I might be pushing it with child cover as my parents would have had the kiddies from Wednesday through to Friday night already. I can make Sunday morning though early around 9ish but need to back for 1.30. Can do hurstwood into hebden if you fancy it or around rivington way.

Good stuff, if it doesn't rain before then it should hopefully be dry enough to go along the trail from the long causeway towards Todmorden gold club, into Hebden and back around via Widdop. Or we can decide a route on the morning. Should we aim for the top Windmill car park, where we met a while ago?
See you then.
