Worth it if you like xc or somebody who's knows the area really for off piste I.e hodgy. The only decent trail centre stuff is the deadwater trail which isn't the longest. Black and red graded.

Cheers. Just had ideas of bringing my bike up here next time I visit.
Think I'll stop off at Whinlatter on the way back instead If I do bring my bike.

Well Jay ...Ds ..is right ..almost . It depends what you want ..of the man -made stuff there is in excess of 100 miles of trail which just staying on this and mixing and matching the different routes can give you an excellent day out .. The biggest problem that we have up here is maintenance ..there is a small but devoted group of trail builders ( which I am going to re-join) but due to the sheer scale of the place it's a constant battle ..a lot of riders dismiss the place as too rough ( the surface) ...but it's slowly improving and getting better . It's also my back yard ..and I do know the off piste sections as well as most with enough variation to give a whole weeks worth of riding ! We are proud of what we have got here ..but it is a journey and a remote location..not somewhere you pass through to go elsewhere..but you are always welcome .
This sampler should give you a good idea..it shows the best of the downs on the Deadwater & Lonesome Pine trails . The section which has the black "fines" surface is called Capon Hassock and was built totally by hand ..no machinery involved at all ..everything was moved by hand ..wheelbarrows and shovels and saws and loppers even down to the rocks in the stream crossing at the end .. I attended a good few of the building sessions on this ..but Dave T, Jean & Gramish ..who I ride with did a whole lot more ..this small section took over a year to build !

When up here, like now, I stay in Cramlington.
To get here I use the M6 upto junction 43 (or is it 42)then onto the A69 across to the A1.
I was looking at a map and it seems I pass by a hell of a lot of potential riding places. Kielder being one of them.
I'll do a bit of research and bring my bike next time. I won't be after an all day epic, just a few hours.
I also get within easy reach of Whinlatter on the M6 and I really enjoyed riding there so, that's also an option.
Wherever I go, it'll need to have marked trails/routes.

Hamsterley forest isnt to far from crammy and is more a trail centre with marked trails/routes. You can get onto the A68 from the A69 and head down till you see the sign post for the forest. Afterwards take the A688 from the A68 to barnard castle then onto the 66 all the way to whinlatter for the crack, sounds like a plan I know.

If you give us locals a bit of notice we could organise a natural ride for you (plenty of belters up here, Edmundbyers loop springs to mind) so you spend more time on the bike, less in the car.

That would be brilliant. I'll be back toward the middle of May. Unsure of dates as yet but I'll keep you posted
