Went to Llandegla yesterday. It was an absolutely glorious day, conditions were perfect and the place was looking beautiful. I unfortunately came a cropper on the second section of the B line. I got out of shape on the first of a set two kickers, losing both feet off the pedals. With no footing I was just launched OTB onto the rocky ground. Thank god for mates and helmets! Here is my Bell Stoker: And here is my gravel rash. Wounds at the top are friction burns from my t shirt, the rest being embedded with dirt. I must have hit my noggin on a rock on the way down hence the dents in the lid. It took me 15 minutes to get on my feet and my mate pushed my bike for a good few miles whilst I hobbled around. After 45 minutes I managed to get back on the bike on the fire roads to coast back to the car, albeit with severely restricted movements. Strava puts the speed at the time of the crash at 26.2 mph, not bad! i managed to smash the hell out of my phone as well! Drove back home to Midlands and met the dragon who nagged me to go to A&E. I declined but my right elbow disappeared under the swelling overnight so have in. The hospital have told me I'm out for six weeks at least with two fractured elbows (radial heads which I fractured before on a motorbike!) Currently having trouble walking on a bruised hip and my shoulder/collar bone is very painful too, although not reported that to the hospital yet for fear of them telling me I can't drive for even longer! Currently looking for a turbo trainer so I can at least get some miles in on the road bike in safety! Six weeks off is going to kill me, just as the weather is getting better too! I have broken bones but that helmet might have just saved some brain function, it would have been a mess had I not been wearing one like the local scallywags we saw around Degla! On the plus side, I can confirm Commencal Meta V4's crash well!

Ouch Barrfy ..that does look painful .. I'm assuming that there is predictive text in the first section ..and that your mates weren't laughing as you were "launched " not laughed OTB ! Wishing you a speedy recovery ..and I'm with you all the way regarding helmets .,,if I had my way they would be made compulsory ..

The funny stance on the photo is how straight I could get my arms at the time, now a bit less due to swelling. I'm hoping so Will, already having to cancel two sportives. I'm hoping to be able to do the Long Mynd Batch Burner in 7 weeks, fingers crossed!

Don't talk soft you lot, the beard broke his fall! Without the luxuriant face fungus he'd have been strawberry jam! Seriously, hope you mend fast H, trouble with being quick is it hurts more when you crash. Apparently.

Ouch, i assume you gott some antibiotics from the docs or you will get an infection How do you heal fractured elbows?? Turbo trainers are great, I borrowed one for when I was out of action in a cast last year No anti-biotics, i'll see how I go and hope for the best! It's both Radial Heads that have gone which is on the smaller of the two bones in your forearm. Treatment is just a sling as the bones are stable and unlikely to move so long as I don't do anything daft. In 2 weeks or so i'll have to start moving it and trying to regain normal movement as its pretty restricted at the moment. I'm unable to rotate and I can straighten the right arm about 2/3 rd's of the way, the left I can almost straighten. In six weeks I should be fully healed and can start contact sports again. How do I know all of this? I did the same thing 12 years ago! I was wearing knee pads but not elbow pads. I will be buying them when i'm back riding to be honest but radial head fractures are compression injuries from your natural instinct to try and break your fall, something a pad wouldn't stop. From the video I can't see my arms out and I don't recall putting them out to stop me, just pile-driving the ground with my right hand side. It looks as though the left elbow got busted by my bike hitting me though, i guess that's how my phone smashed too as it was in my camelbak!
