Did another big loop in the peaks this Sunday just gone but with a different start point....
Met my mate Chaz in Castleton at 8am on a very very wet Sunday morning, after sitting in my car for 15 minutes trying to convince ourselves we weren't mental we finally jumped and made a mad rush to get our wet gear on before getting drowned. We then set of up the broken road to Mam tor, over the top of that and onto Rushup edge, down Rushup to join Roych clough and head over to Hayfield, did the Coldwell clough descent and Hayfield campsite descent, then doubled back and headed up Kinder low and the grass bank towards Jacobs ladder, halfway up kinder though the pedal on Chaz's bike came loose and stripped half the threads out of the crank arm, at this point we were a good 8 miles away from the cars and over the wrong side of Jacobs and very wet too. I managed to screw the pedal back on a bit, so we could carry on and try to nurse her bike back, half a mile later though it came off again, we cleaned the threads up best we could and i managed to screw the pedal all the way back in and get a good grip on the carnk arm so we then cracked on.
We headed across Kinder low and onto the climb up Jacobs ladder, down the zig zags and onto barber booth all the while taking it steady to try and keep the pedal on, we then decided rather than climb Hollins cross and Mam Tor we would just climb Cold side as steep and evil as it is, it was the best option to get back, Once we was at the back of Mam Tor it was then plain sailing straight down the footpath onto the broken road and drop down into Castleton, where i ditched my wet gear in the car and Chaz packed up to go home.
That first loop was 20 miles long with around 3000ft of ascent/descent which she did damn well on a hardtail diamond back she'd never ridden off road before (her Ibis was in the shop for repair) and with shit tyres and a wonky pedal
I then went back out to do a second loop as it was only 3pm and i still had time, so i set off up the broken rd to Mam Tor, round the back of it and up and over to Hollins cross, this time instead of doing the descent into Greenlands i did the only just past it down to the farm at Edale, I then hit the road for a couple of miles and headed up and over Jaggers clough (bastard climb) to Hope cross where i swung a right and headed over to Hope Brink where i did the old roman rd descent down into Hope village, once in the village i just crossed the road and headed up towards the cement works but took a left up the quiet lane to Bradwell so that i could head down the trail that cuts through the cement works and up to Pindale quarry, I then climbed up through the quarry to Dirtlow rake where the heavens opened and i got absolutely drenched! Glad i ditched my wet gear earlier lol. After climbing dirtlow rake i swung a right and did the amazing Cavedale descent down in to Castleton, and back to my car.
Total ride was 36.4 miles, 8.5hrs in the saddle, moving time was 5.5hrs, 6948ft ascent, 6901ft descent.
Awesome day
Some pics, not many though as it was to damn wet...
8am Castleton, in search of motivation
Rushup edge in full flow
Hayfield campsite descent, Strava has now flagged it as dangerous lol
Video of Chaz on Rushup (if it works)
Heading out for my second loop
