not literaly, but i have been running 1 x10 with an expander for 6 months now, and find i am under geared on a lot of the rides i do,some times its on the long steep ups, but mostly on the long flat and rolling bits inbetween, 1 x10 is great if you ride bike parks and trails close to home but i have to ride alot of road between the trails so, am finding it a ball ache as have to pedal like a fool to keep up or go bigger on the front ring , and push on the steep ups on the trails

Makes sense. I have 1x10 (11/40) with a 32t up front on my FS and is ideal for my more hilly rides. My HT that I use more for xc was built up 1x10 (11/36) with a 32t up front was totaly under geared, so I changed to a 34t up front. I am now considering going 36t up front but it may mean putting a 40 or 42t on the back. (or wait for the new Shimano 1x11 to come out). You should ride what suits and not what's fashionable.

gaz i run a 32 or a 34 and some times a 30 depends on were i go, if its very hilly i run a 30, otherwise one of the others, but here you find you have long runs betweem good bits as its mainly single track or lanes,, so allways some flat or slightly down hilll and when i ride with the group if i take the full suser i cant keep up as they all run 2 or 3 x 10

I run 3x10 on HT and FS mainly because I couldn't be bothered to change but I also felt that 1x10 wouldn't be enough on some of our interlinking road sections we have. Even my mate on a 2x10 is under geared on a couple of the big hills.

Funny as I run a 30 on the front and do long runs and never run out of gears unless I'm going up something stupid .. Like snowdon .. But that's on my 29er ,
But saying that I do like the idea of having the granny ring on the spesh ..

Think he's on about road/fire road sections where he's spinning out Gaz, not so much the climbing.

well my bikes are a 29ers and i spin out all the time if i run a 30 front, we have so much in between sections it drives me mad ,love living here but thier are no bike parks or places like the chase or fod within 400kms, of me so we ride xc and am all on old trails for crossing the mountians and forest tracks, so loads of boring for a few good bits, i do a 22km local loop and in that about 6kms are tecky single track and the rest is a mix of lanes and fire roads.

2x10 for me on the in-bred cos that's what it came with. 3x9 on the full suss. its the way forward....or at least it will be when it comes round again

You've got to do what is right for you. For what it's worth I'm still not convinced 1x10 is all it's cracked up to be

I love the simplicity of it, the clean left side of the bars, the ease of not werreting about what chain ring I'm in, plus it's perfect for where I ride and forces me to not be lazy. Great if you want to push your fitness and not just spin up hills. However, totally unsuitable for Wales and the Peaks hence the pussy cog on the full suss

Sounds like you need an extra ring rather than a bigger one. you could easily run something like a 36-28 up front on the lower may feel a bit underpowered but youll have a crosseover with the 36 anyway. I know your pain I ran with a 32 for a bit and was struggling between trails rest of the lads would scoot off while your pedalling like a clown and getting nowhere. 36T I can hit about 30MPH if needed. Id go 2X10 with a bashring, ok its more weight but saves your legs being munched. Been using 2X9 on mine for well over a year now rarely feel underpowered and its easy enough to use an old shifter just limit the travel on it.

I still don't get it you lads must be traveling at 20+ mph On the flats ... I'm ticking over at 13/14 mph and not spinning out strange one But saying that took the spesh out and that's on a double up front 36/ 28 and never dropped out the 36 ring .. But each to there own

I look at it this way 3X9 is 12 rings (3 up front and 9 on the back) , oh we all need to spend money with manufactures to get the latest 2X10 (but think a minute it's still 12 rings , have they had my pants down) , now we all need mega bucks 1X11 but that's still 12 rings and we're being properly shafted now . Marketing , fashion and keeping up with the Jones's is a great way of emptying your wallet , me I run 2X9 and bash on both bikes (don't like an exposed sawblade near my leg) and if I run out of pedalling downhill just use it as a rest .
