This is a ride I have wanted to re-visit for years ..so when Dave T mentioned a Cheviot ride this weekend ..I thought about something different ...
The ride starts over the border ...to get there take the A68 over Carter Bar taking the very minor road off to Edgerton Mill and following this to a crossroad of road and track to Pennymuir ..this is where the ride starts ..parking is limited ! There is an old Roman Fort serving Ciabatta bacon sarnies ..( made that bit up )
We start off heading North on the course of the old roman road.. Dere Street .
Now before anyone has a pop ..I can't vouch for the condition of these trails ..it was rideable last time out but even back then there was evidence of motor cycles ..so you place your money and take your bet ..keeping your fingers crossed .
We follow the course of this ancient road to Whitton Edge where we turn right on the Tarmac and after a short section on the road turn right again adjacent to Whitton Loch .
I have not been on this section ..but it looks good dropping as it does to Chatto.
At Chatto turn left towards Hownan and just prior where the road forks turn right to Greenhill.
At Greenhill we turn left onto a rough track to climb up to The Street.
We now follow this well known track for 4 km to cross the border and turn right onto the border ridge ...and The Pennine Way
This section may be familiar to most ..but I doubt you will have ridden it in this direction!
We now follow this over Mozie Law , Beefstand Hill, Lamb Hill and on to the Mountain Refuge hut at Yearning Saddle..where we can make up something witty for the visitors book !
Now for something different ..a raid back over the border on a track that starts over the fence behind the hut !
This is a screamer of a track ( get a map out and look at the contours ! ) which drops down to Buchtrig..from where it's a short hop back to the cars ...or..do we take a left to contour Langside Law and then drop to Towford?
10 .30 start ...who is coming ?
